For the third year in a row, UCI Sue & Bill Gross School of Nursing joined the UCI Anti-Cancer Challenge, a community-driven effort to raise funds for promising cancer research. In 2025, the Challenge raised more than $1.6 million, helping support research projects and early-phase clinical trials advancing new approaches to cancer prevention, treatment, and care.

This year, our team was led by student Captains @tiana.luong and @zoedariann , who helped bring our community together around this important mission. It was wonderful to see our students, faculty, and families come together in support of cancer research. From chanting to beat cancer to running, cheering, and connecting, the day was a reminder of the impact we can make when we unite for a cause bigger than ourselves. 🙌

A special congratulations to @s_stutsman, our top student fundraiser (and fastest runner).

As nurses, we recognize that advancing health takes a collective effort. Supporting research, engaging with our communities, and working toward better health outcomes are all part of that commitment. It was inspiring to see our students put these values into action.

A heartfelt thank-you to the UCI Anti-Cancer Challenge for bringing people together to advance cancer research and to Genevieve Mendoza Laurent for making this happen. We are grateful to be part of this collective effort and look forward to coming together again next year! 💜. #anticancerchallenge #nurses #nursing #nursingstudents #community @ucinursing @anticancerchallenge @nssc_uci @ucirvine @jungah_anna_lee @ucihealth.

After 17 years in healthcare and military service, Selam Gebrezghi noticed a common thread across every specialty she practiced: mental health.

That realization led her back to her alma mater. After earning her psychology degree from UC Davis in 2002, she returned more than 20 years later to complete the UC Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Certificate Program.

Today, she’s focused on supporting survivors of interpersonal violence.

“A lot of times, these patients are going to the emergency room post sexual assault or trauma. There’s no place for them to receive follow-up. My passion is to be the one to follow up with these populations, focusing on women’s health, brain health and focusing on how to intervene early,” Selam said.
