A gene called ASDL, which helps synthesize DNA, differs between modern humans and our extinct human relatives. The findings could shed light on why Neanderthals vanished. A protein that helps synthesize DNA is different in modern humans than it is in Neanderthals and Denisovans…..

More studies for the UCL Multimedia Anthropology Lab regarding Guarani Kaiowa use of sound as a technology, this visual aspect is a response to the elders’ descriptions of how light propagates from the chants.

Can sound take us into space? We were invited to a very special recording session at Youth’s home studio in London, where Guarani and Kaiowá Indigenous elders joined @mattblackninja @youthmartin and Tymon Dogg in a unique musical collaboration, along with Indigenous musicians @kelvinmbarete and @scott_h1ll . The result is a unique album - Shamans in Space - that will be released this week on limited edition vinyl by @liquidsounddesignuk , celebrating Brazil’s national day of Indigenous people.

The album brings the ancestral traditions of Guarani and Kaiowá sonic shamanism into dialogue with the complex layers and psychedelic textures of UK ambient electronica. Together, these remarkable musicians embarked on a cross-cultural exploration of sound and its potential to transport us to new planes of experience.

The project was guided by a radically collaborative approach which sets a new standard for cross-cultural partnerships between indigenous communities and electronic music artists. Youth and Matt Black listened to the elders sonic philosophy and followed their direction, spending weeks in the studio to create this deep composition. Then, elders were invited to review the tracks and provide Guarani names to each one. The final result is a genuine partnership, co-created by the combined sonic histories of Indigenous communities and UK electronic music pioneers.

All artists’ have generously agreed to donate the artist royalties to the communities themselves, directly supporting the elders who preserve these ancestral traditions.

I am immensely grateful to everyone who has worked so hard to bring this record into being - from Youth and Matt Black who contributed so much of their time and effort, Robin Triskele, @dinazstafford and and the production team who made it possible to bring the elders to London - including @oga_yvytu , Scott Hill, and the whole team at @ucl_mal , as well as the support from @uclenterprise . I am also grateful to @luca_sorsoli , who edited this beautiful video.

The suns/light studies, produced in response to a series of sonic studies generated as part of my engagements with Brazil’s indigenous Guarani Kaiowa people as a member of AMOENUS and in collaboration with the UCL Multimedia Anthropology Lab, with particular focus on their use of sound rather than psychedelics as means of opening portals/dialogue with nature and entities. These suns studies were generated with Gemini ai to generate visualisers to express my understanding of the emergent light that emerges and fills the Oga (ceremonial house) and acts as a portal during Guarani Kaiowa chants. The Taquapu is an Mba’kuaa or technology, a carefully selected and blessed piece of thick bamboo that is used to pound the earth by the female practitioners during ceremonies. This pounding acts to send the chants, the signals, into and through the earth, and onward to the spirit entities. I was encouraged by them to respond using my technology, my computer. The results were shared with the elders and our indigenous collaborators during our visit to their territories in Brazil last year, and will be shared publicly soon. Meanwhile, go to https://www.uclmal.com/ for more information on these engagements. Go to https://amoenus.co.uk/ for more info on our sonic exploration.

How can sound shape the future? Back in 2024 we invited a group of Guarani and Kaiowá Indigenous community members to visit London and showcase our collaborative work. These Indigenous elders have a unique cosmology about sound and its power to shape the world. They understand musical instruments as their "wifi to the gods" - ancestral technologies for communication between worlds. During their visit, we mobilised a series of collaborations with pioneers of UK electronic music, including @aguycalledgerald, @youthmartin, @mattblackninja, and collectively explored how sound technologies can connect us to different worlds. This performance at @thebloomsburytheatre also included a special encounter between Indigenous shamans from Brazil - Nhanderu Tadeu, Nhandesy Fausta & Nhandesy Rozeli - and Celtic Druids @chrischarlespark, @fleurcamille_hearthalchemy, @laura_wilcock_ and sarahbear_long_1994. The event featured performances from indigenous hip hop pioneer @kelvinmbarete and DJ @scott_h1ll, with video mapping from @blanca_regina. The Sounding Futures project was made possible through the hard work and incredible energy of many people, including: Project Codirector: @oga_yvytu / Project Codirector: @scott_h1ll / Project Codirector: @raffaellafryermoreira / Production: @ucl_mal / Production: @dinazstafford / Production: @all_is_rhythm / Production Assistant: @biayu.m / Production Assistant: @5bucksvenmo / Spatial Sound: @olo.xolo / Spatial Sound: @georginabrett.music / Ambisonic Technician: @bh.n471v3 / Visual Art: @vytas.vytas / Ambisonic Support: @amoenus_london / Digital Marketing: Valentina Rusciano / Digital Communications: @__krushnakant / Video Edited by: @el._.hakim / Video production support: @nata.scherer / @cunardnick

British-Brazilian anthropologist Raffaella Fryer-Moreira was our 2024 UCL RIC Liberating the Collections Fellow. Over the last few years she has been working in partnership with Guarani and Kaiowá Indigenous communities in Brazil to explore how new technologies can offer new methods of research practice, and consider how co-creation can lead to better results at each stage of the research process. The Fellowship grant enabled Raffaella to set up a project with @grantmuseumucl :

"Last year I had the privilege of extending this work in partnership with the Grant Museum of Zoology at UCL as part of the Liberating the Collections Research Fellowship, where we worked with Guarani and Kaiowá elders to consider how natural history museums and zoology collections could be re-imagined and re-designed in dialogue with Indigenous ecological knowledge.

As part of the project, we invited Guarani and Kaiowá Indigenous elders to visit the Grant Museum of Zoology and discuss the collections, which gave us the opportunity to learn about their complex ecological cosmologies and how this knowledge shapes local approaches to conservation."

This short clip, edited by creative student volunteers at @ucl_mal is a teaser for a forthcoming mini documentary about the project.

Also interested in applying for a Visiting Fellowship? The deadline is TODAY! Head to the link in our bio for full details.
