Another inspired weekend at UCLA, teaching the women’s writing weekend intensive for @uclaextension ✨ I always love to do a writing exercise based on people bringing in “three tiny objects.” You have to pick a minimum of three but not your own! Stories go in all kinds of directions and our creativity really gets to shine! Thanks to all the courageous and awesome women who came to write with me this weekend.

If you missed it, don’t be afraid, I’ll be back @ucla in the winter!

A double Master degree and a double certificate later, here I am! I graduated yesterday from @ucla & @uclaextension. Historic restaurants that created the luscious signature desserts lovingly prepared for OLLI fundraiser were given full due in a lively presentation by instructor and restaurant writer, Sharon Boorstin.

I’ve been so lucky as a Beverly Hills columnist and guidebook author to know most of them, from green corn tamale parties with Michelle Phillips and a dozen tequila shots at El Cholo, to Newsweek lunches at Scandia and interviewing call girls at The Brown Derby for a book.

Family visits to Blums and Hamburger Hamlet with all of us awed by the gigantic 7-layer chocolate cake. My aunt awed at all I consumed at a Spago thank you lunch by Sherry Yard for a necklace I made for her.

The treasured fairy tale story, though, belongs to Lawry’s. It began with their beautiful, spirited marketing director taking a long look at me at an media event and announcing, “I know we are going to be friends, as she handed me two little bottles of Lawry’s seasonings.

That’s her at her wedding I was so honored to attend — and laugh with other guests to see her tidy up a guest table still in her wedding gown!

I had Prime Rib that day although Chef Walter’s fish with boysenberries was sublime. I know. I was a tester when Lawry’s The Prime Rib initiated the fish project for non-meat eaters who might cause a diner group cancellation. I was promised solemnly that I could change dishes if I didn’t like the fish!

Lawry’s waiters won the Waiter’s Race I created for LA a La Carte, here praised by the LA WEEKLY, and a syndicated newspaper article on it. Lawry’s remain beloved, regular charity event participants.

We filmed the BEEF BOWL for a historic restaurant series, with a newly vegan cameraman and sympathetic producer politely who followed suit that day.

It fell to me to eat their share, a season’s lot in one feast! A very fitting end to this tale along with the two sets of twins in the next five or so years that followed.

Even the announcement was mouth-watering for the fundraiser at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UCLA.

Titled “Giving Matters to Lifelong Learning: Savoring L.A. and exploring the history of Los Angeles dessertswith former Bon Appetit Editor-in-Chief, Barbara Fairchild.”

Dessert tables being set up by beautifully dressed, friendly volunteers when guests walked in created a buzz.

OLLI instructor and restaurant writer, Sharon Boorstin, who presented a slideshow presentation on the restaurants represented, was clever to serve the enticing desserts first!

Sherry Yard’s signature Honey-Glazed Spago Corn Bread, also known as corn cake, was created for Spago. The recipe is featured in her cookbook Desserts by the Yard and can be found on-line.

OLLI could not have created a better ad for their program. Thank you to my host, Annetta Kapon, who is an enthusiastic student and supporter of the program.

Barbara Fairchild’s captivating, if nostalgic, talk about Bon Appetit ranged from descriptions of recipe testing* and staff meetings at the Newhouse empire magazine to a hilarious and memorable account of meeting the queen twice in one day. (Our editor Roberts Deen was a recipe tester! Her veggie portrait here).

Accolades to both delightful experts, Barbara (left) and Sharon Boorstin (rt) who made this “class” as entertaining (and delicious) as it was informative.

And to the writer who was among the first to write about California Cuisine and LA’s ethnic culinary treasures, Barbara Hansen.

Her “California Cooking Style”(1971) was a primer for exploring the state’s diverse cuisine.

Barbara’s revised (1989) “Mexican Cookery” features color photographs of clear, well-tested recipes for classics and Mexican-style soups, salads, main dishes, desserts, and breads.

Her “Border Line” column about Mexican cuisine rolled in with the waves of immigration to Southern California that introduced Mexican, Japanese, Korean, South American, Greek, and Armenian food to readers.

Barbara felt compelled to explore different foods and flavors while working at the LA Times, writing about food and the human connection. “Food has a face,” she said.

The famous El Cholo Restaurant pralines are shown here. I’ve been a fan of El Cholo since we were regulars when I was at Newsweek — green corn tamales and off-the-menu fiery rellenos since the beginning!

Last is the dessert queen: Nancy Silverton. Her lemon filo pie was destination Drive- worth from anywhere!

The journey of learning and growing never stops, no matter how many years of experience you have!

I’m excited to share that I am currently enrolled in @uclaextension Lead Teacher coursework, continuing my educational journey from September through May.

After more than 35 years in family child care, I’m still learning, still growing, and still passionate about providing the highest quality care and education for young children.

A heartfelt thank you to the @ccputrainingfund for making this opportunity possible. I am truly grateful! 🙏🏽

Inshallah, I will continue to grow in knowledge, purpose, and service. The journey continues! 💙💛

Autism & Transition Programs: It’s application time! 🎓

After months of researching, touring and going back for second looks, I’m starting to apply to my top FOUR autism transition programs so far:

🐻 UCLA Extension — Pathway Program | Los Angeles, CA

☀️ College Living Experience (CLE) | Costa Mesa, CA

🎓 Lesley University — Threshold Program | Cambridge, MA

🌊 Riverview School — GROW Program | Cape Cod, MA

And turns out… applying is a whole process!
Applications, student questionnaires, recommendations, evaluations, interviews, paperwork and even more visits.

The biggest thing we’re learning? There isn’t one path after high school for autistic and neurodivergent young adults. In fact, many kids do multiple programs… for example, some start in the GROW program, then to Lesley or UCLA, then to CLE. 🤷🏼‍♀️

We’re looking for the right starting place that can help keep building independence, life skills, friendships and confidence!

📝 Other important factors will include moving, costs, regional center help, scholarships, and where we feel the most comfortable!

Now we wait…🤞🏻 And we will take you along for whatever happens next!
