Hawkes Institute researchers had a brilliant MICCAI 2026 🎉

🏆 Prof Daniel Alexander received a Fellowship Award for his work in diffusion MRI, disease modelling and machine learning. Dr Carole Sudre won an Outstanding Area Chair Award, and PhD student Louise Baron placed 2nd in the Women in MICCAI Award for Best Oral Presentation.

🎯 Hawkes teams also swept the ORenA SAVE Focus Challenge podium (chaired by Prof Dan Stoyanov), with Dr Yipei Wang, Dr Shiqi Huang, Weixi Yi, Hanyuan Zhang and Runlong He placing across the Frame, Segment and Procedure Tracks.

🎤 Three orals and a spotlight were selected for the main conference, from Wen Yan, Runlong He, Dimitrios Anastasiou and Louise Baron, alongside a strong showing of ten posters.

🛠️ Hawkes researchers also organised tutorials and led multiple satellite workshops, with Sophia Bano being on the Organising Committee.

Congratulations to everyone involved!

How can computers see a 3D world in flat images? 👀

For Professor Lourdes Agapito, that question has helped open a path from research to co-founding AI video company Synthesia.

This #AdaLovelaceDay, meet the UCL computer scientist who is:
✨ A newly elected Fellow of the @royalacademyofengineering
✨ Named in Sifted’s 100 Women in Tech in Europe 2026
✨ Now co-leading the AI Hub in Generative Models, supported by EPSRC.

Ada Lovelace saw possibilities for computing beyond calculation. Today, we’re celebrating Lourdes and the work she and her collaborators are doing to explore what comes next.

Here’s another Friday instalment of ‘View from my UCL Window’ 🪟: A sneak peek inside The Science Library via the cafe.

Based in the DMS Watson Building on Malet Place, it’s home to UCL’s Computer Science collections, supporting the reading and research behind our work.

And with a café on the ground floor, there’s space for a coffee and a catch-up between study sessions too. 📚☕

Look out for more views next Friday!

Labs, study spaces, greenery… and robots 🤖 Welcome to student life at UCL East.

Muhammad, a fourth-year Robotics and Artificial Intelligence MEng student, is back to share his campus highlights.

Officially opened in September 2023, UCL East is set in @queenelizabetholympicpark in Stratford, east London. Its green surroundings offer space to slow down between classes, while the bustling shops and restaurants around Westfield Stratford City and Stratford station are a walk away. Whether you’re after a calmer setting or a lively shopping and dining district, you have both within reach.

The campus is also part of @EastBank, a cultural and education quarter bringing together UCL, V&A East, Sadler’s Wells East and UAL’s London College of Fashion, with BBC Music Studios due to open in 2027.

Look out for more student tips in the coming days.

Have you visited UCL East yet? Tell us your favourite spot 👇

How can you prepare for the TARA?

This is one of the most common questions we get from prospective undergraduate students applying to UCL Computer Science.

The Test of Academic Reasoning for Admissions (TARA) is a requirement when applying to any undergraduate course in the Department of Computer Science. Alongside your A-Levels, IB or equivalent and your UCAS application, you must also take the TARA.

The TARA tests three key skills: logic, critical thinking and writing. It’s designed to be an exam that you can’t really revise for, but there are definitely ways you can prepare to feel more confident and increase your chances of doing well.

In this video we hear from first year UCL Computer Science students on which practice papers they did, how they familiarised themselves with the format and how they kept their cool on exam day.

A huge thank you to all the students who shared their tips and advice. We showed up on their very first day of uni with a camera and mic, and everyone was so willing to share their tips.

We know lots of you are preparing for the TARA in October and January, so we wanted to get their advice to you as soon as we could.

New students: Where to go to get your student ID (Bloomsbury campus). 🪪

We’ve had quite a few students ask where to go to get their ID. Understandably you don’t know where ‘main campus’ or ‘Portico’ are. (Hint: it’s the iconic building with the dome and pillars seen in the first frames of this reel).

We hope this video helps. You can enter from inside Malet Place/Wilkins (near Print Room Cafe) or from Gordon Street at the side of the Student Centre.

Note: Please make sure you bring correct documents. They need to be scanned. ‼️⚠️

Returning students: Go to Andrew Huxley building near Print Room Cafe for your ID card.
