Montecito Library and UC Master Gardeners invite the community for a presentation focused on gardening and environmental stewardship! Cover crops can be a great way to build healthy soils, both in the ground and in raised beds, and can be attractive seasonal additions to your garden. This talk will cover the benefits of cover crops for soil and pollinators; when and how to plant them; recommended species for Santa Barbara County; and using them for mulch or compost. This Weekend: Plant a Veggie Garden Fall planting season is here! It’s a terrific family activity — teaching your kids how to grow their own food. According to UC Master Gardeners of Orange County, October is the best month for fall vegetable gardens. It’s a good time to plant broccoli, cauliflower, kale, spinach and lettuce. October is also a good time to grow garlic, but experts advise planting soft-neck garlic this time of the year. Three herbs to plant in October are lavender, rosemary and thyme. Be sure to water your garden early in the morning to reduce evaporation; add layers of mulch to help retain nutrients; and consider installing a drip irrigation system so that you can target water flow. Even if you don’t have a backyard, you can grow veggies! Windowsills and well-lit spots are ideal for herbs as houseplants. They’re easy to grow and convenient for use in soups, stews and everyday dishes. #irvine #garden #gardening #ucmastergardenersoforangecounty #ucmastergardener

Growing a greener, more welcoming Downtown Merced! 🌿 A few months ago, we introduced our new downtown planters, bringing more color and greenery to our streets! We were joined by community volunteers, including one of our dedicated PBID board members, @ucmastergardeners, members of the Garden Club and Rescue Mission volunteers! The planters are just one of the many improvements we’ve made over the past year! From giving our light poles a fresh coat of paint to having Downtown Ambassadors on our streets five days a week, we’re continuing to invest in a cleaner, more beautiful, and welcoming downtown. And we’re not done yet! 🌱 Over the next few weeks, keep an eye out as we expand our planter program and bring even more greenery to our downtown streets. Sometimes you’re having a rough day and then remember your brain wasn’t meant for so much noise… so you go touch some dirt 🌱 And honestly, it helped so much today. With Kari’s @herbal_anarchy guidance and patience, I got to slow down, learn something new, and actually feel more confident about my plant knowledge. I took a little break from the everyday buzz and got a mini education in container gardening and natural fertilizers, then even got to pot some herbs grown right here at the University Farm @chicostateuniversityfarm and bring them home to grow myself. Now… wish me luck! 😂 I also learned more about UC Master Gardeners of Butte County @buttecountymg and their workshops happening throughout Butte County. The program welcomes people with or without gardening experience who want to expand their horticultural knowledge and skills while giving back to the community through local volunteer programs. And the best part? Their workshops are FREE! 🌱 Apparently Southern California can grow WAY more fruit than I realized. At the UC Master Gardeners of San Diego Fall Plant Sale, I sat in on Richard Reid’s free talk on growing subtropical fruit in Southern California — then promptly came home with 5 plants I’d never grown before 😅 My new experiments: 🍒 Surinam cherry ‘pitanga’ 🫐 Red hybrid jaboticaba 🫐 Corrientes jaboticaba 🍒 Cherry of the Rio Grande 🖤 Grumichama Richard grows more than 100 tropical + subtropical fruit species locally, which gave me just enough confidence to try these in inland Poway. Most are South American, many from Brazil, and several prefer acidic soil + consistent moisture — so I’ll be container-growing them and paying much closer attention to our alkaline San Diego water. I’m especially nervous/excited about the jaboticabas (I can barely grow cucumbers so we’ll see if they survive my brown thumb 😅) The talk also covered mango, guava, pineapple guava, cherimoya, dragon fruit + longan. Pineapple guava gets my wholehearted vote — I grew up with a huge tree in El Cajon and still think the flavor is incredible. Now I’m hunting for a Sweet Tart mango + longan sapling. San Diego rare-fruit people: where should I look? 👀 And huge appreciation to our local Master Gardeners for making this knowledge so accessible — their work supports gardens and gardeners all across the county 💚 @ucmastergardeners @mgasdc @california_rare_fruit_growers #mastergardener #rarefruit #subtropicalgarden #garden #discovery

WELCOME BACK! We’re opening the farm for fall! After a quiet summer, The Market at Killdeer Farms returns on Saturday, September 19. Come grab a coffee, wander the farm with a friend, and shop the first pumpkins of the season—along with local honey from @golden_honeybees, herbal teas and remedies from @antiqueroseapothecary, autumn wreaths handmade by @brendasmidtownflowers, fresh cookies from @cncbakeryllc and plenty of other good things. The @ucmastergardeners will be here to help with your fall garden questions, @built.with.dad.sactown is hosting a special children’s market, and @lenisescafe will have the coffee and pastries covered. Basically, all you need to do is show up. And if buying a pumpkin in September feels slightly premature, please remember: we’re emotionally finished with summer. The weather can catch up later.
