So hey, thought I would pass this on. This is from another editor, from another litmag. Yes, this is the timeline we are living in. Editors out there are dealing with A LOT right now. So I know some of you are going, ‘why does it take so long to get feedback or an answer from a litmag?? How hard can it be to read hundreds of stories, evaluate each of them, and make decisions?’ Well, yeah. Not only are we getting stories that we are concerned may be AI (which then takes quite a bit of time on our part to try to ascertain the truth, because unfortunately if the author used it they will rarely admit it), buuuuuut now AI bots are simply submitting on their own. And this is not a ‘cry tears for us’ type of thing, just letting you guys know what we now have to contend with.

Like the ancient Chinese curse portends, ‘May you live in interesting times.’

‘Sup, folks. So, a few things here: first, yup, we’ll he out at the 29p Book Fest holding it down again—dates on the graphic above. IF you are a writer and plan on coming, first off, let them know, so you can get on some panels. Also, IF you are attending the fest and are interested in a reading spot in the Noir in the Boneyard, you have to let us know! Those spots fill up quickly. We generally go with 8 or 9 readers, and we already have multiple spots filled, so be sure to reach out to Brian here at Starlite and let us know. No guarantees; we always have more interest than spots, but we do the best we can with it.

Meanwhile, Jess & Ryan are working on the new poster! 🤙🏼

Y’know, it’s a funny thing—before I started this deal, I knew how to put a litmag together (thank you, USC and Southern California Anthology), but I had no idea how to get them into people’s hands. Turns out, it’s not easy. Bookstores don’t want anthologies, especially serials, and ESPECIALLY ‘genre’ serials (with the awesome exceptions of Greg at @artifact_encinitas & Patrick and Francoise at @desertgeneralstore & Jean-Paul at @spacecowboybooks & a few others), and you make little to no money through Amazon (thanks, Jeff). Thing is, none of that really matters. You ask any small press editor or manager why they got into this deal, and money usually isn’t even in the top-5 reasons. If we have gotten to this point, you see and understand the game, the way it is fixed, and the way it must be played.

So instead, our little litmag just keeps chugging along, winning awards, going to book fests, getting strong reviews, and publishing amazing indie authors. This new issue is just great: such cool, independent voices, scattered over numerous pulp sub-genres: we’ve got an IRA terrorist in an Irish pub in New York, a mermaid in the Old West, bigfoot sightings in San Diego, nazi POW’s on American soil during WW2, CIA MK Ultra mind-control games being played, and so much more, written by artists who are far better than 80% of the slop you see—the ‘content’—written by Big-5 authors.

So yeah. Starlite Pulp Review. Shop indie. Read indie authors. Reject the AI slop. The big-5 won’t miss ya, I promise.

Not even 2 hours into the shop being open today and I looked up to see a group of dear writer friends from my MFA program @ucrpdlrmfa , who journeyed here (some for hours!!) to surprise me! To everyone who talks shit about creative writing MFA programs: it isn’t just a couple years of writing and a degree. It’s friends and community for life. And not just friends, but friends with phenomenal taste in books and bookstores 😎
