Are you interested in graduate school? Earlier this month we sent eight Humanities students to the California Forum for Diversity in Graduate Education in San Diego. The Forum is a one-day conference for college students in California that offers workshops, networking, and exposure to opportunities in graduate education. The event highlights the importance that all students, including those that may face access barriers, have the opportunity to attend graduate school in their future.

Our eight slugs had a wonderful time at the event. Thinking about attending next time? Take a look at what they thought: 🤗💫

“The conference gave me greater confidence in not only my knowledge of graduate school, but also in myself and my abilities to make it happen. I was encouraged to be curious, to reach out even if I’m unsure of what I want to do, and learned that it never hurts to ask: to reconnect with academic advisors and professors even if some time has passed, to express interest in graduate programs, to contact and discuss your interests with places that catch your eye, and to be open and interested in what is available for you. Take the shot even when you’re unsure because you’ll never know unless you try, and you may just be surprised where life takes you!.” -Neharika P

“I can say in full confidence that my experience at SDSU’s campus for the California Forum for Diversity in Graduate Education has transformed my undergraduate education at UC Santa Cruz. My aspiration to pursue a Ph.D in Sociology and to exist as the first in my family to explore & pursue doctorate programs often feels like wishful thinking; grounding my desire in a conference setting, cultivating connections along students with similar backgrounds, and interacting one on one with graduate school recruiters, has marked itself as an irreplaceable event in my life.” Brileigh G

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the band Cold Tuesday. I’d seen a few videos, but you just never know until a band actually shows up and takes the stage. Especially a group of young rockers from UCSC. 😉🤘🎸💥

Well, these guys made a great first impression. They were polite, professional, and genuinely conscientious about keeping their sound levels under control. And then they started playing!

Cold Tuesday delivered an amazing set of covers with tight musicianship, great energy, and some serious talent. They clearly put a lot of work into their music, and it showed. It’s always exciting to see young musicians who take both their music and their performances seriously.

Another great surprise at The Cruz Room. I’d happily have these guys back anytime!

No one captures the magic of UC Santa Cruz better than a Banana Slug. ✨🌲

Kathleen Balaoing (‘26, film and digital media) – a recent grad and former social media video producer for @ucsc – used mixed media to express how it feels to be a student on our vibrant campus.

At UCSC, student creativity goes beyond the studio. Through our prestigious programs within the Arts Division and opportunities in student employment, Banana Slugs are encouraged to pursue fresh ways to apply their talents, share their perspectives, and make an impact on campus.

Thank you @catleenuniverse for sharing your art and vision with our community. We can’t wait to see where your talents take you next!

🏆 Congratulations to our Ideathon winners Anya Gattani and Kartik Gaurav who are now headed to the Startup World Cup in SF!

They created “Echo Path”, smart glasses that help people with poor or no vision feel vibrations when they’re close to objects around them.

This summer ten students took part in a Japanese immersion program featuring hands-on cultural, artistic, and linguistic learning across Japan. To get a unique behind-the-scenes look at their experience, we sent them with film cameras! They took some amazing photos 🙊💌

The students took JAPN 111 Japanese Arts and Beyond last spring, and they had the opportunity to explore the country alongside UCSC’s Assistant Professor and Japanese Language Program Coordinator Saori Hoshi. They visited top institutions like the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo and the Yokohama Museum of Art and were able to attend special lectures at the Tokyo University of the Arts hosted by Professors Hikaru Fujii and Ryohei Kan.

Where would you like to go explore and study? 💭

From online forums to counselors to influencers, there’s a lot of noise about University of California admissions.

To help sort fact from fiction, here are some common myths about UC undergraduate admissions — and how things really work 👉

Myth #1: UC is impossible to get into.

Reality: About 78% of California first-year applicants get into at least one UC campus.

Myth: “There’s a ‘secret formula’ for getting accepted.”

Reality: Your whole application matters. Academics are the core, but no single piece guarantees admission.

Myth: “Getting into UC is basically a lottery.”

Reality: There is nothing random about UC admissions. Every application is thoroughly reviewed by real humans in a structured process with multiple checks.

Myth: “UC campuses decide together who gets in where.”

Reality: If you apply to multiple campuses, your application gets an independent review at each one. Admissions readers can’t even see what other UCs you applied to.

Myth: “Applying for financial aid will hurt my chances.”

Reality: It absolutely won’t. In fact, admissions teams can’t even access your financial aid application — the two processes are completely independent.
