STUDENT VOICES DESERVE A SEAT AT THE TABLE.

On September 27, Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed AB 2551, a bill that would have increased transparency around the enforcement of campus protest policies and created opportunities for student and community input on Time, Place, and Manner (TPM) restrictions.

The SUA Office of External Affairs stands in opposition to this veto. As students, we deserve transparency, meaningful consultation, and accountability when policies directly impact our ability to speak, organize, and protest on our campuses.

AB 2551 was a step toward ensuring students are not simply informed of decisions made about our rights, but are included in shaping them.

We will continue advocating at the campus, UC, state, and federal levels for student voices and the right to political expression.

UC Santa Cruz is proudly celebrating the signing of SB 1255 (authored by Senator Eloise Gómez Reyes) and AB 2374 (authored by Assemblymember Mike Fong) by Governor Gavin Newsom ✍🏼

✨This landmark legislation marks a monumental step forward for California’s Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs), recognizing their significant role in educating California’s diverse student population and preparing the state’s workforce 🎓💼⛑️

We extend our deepest gratitude to Senator Reyes, Assemblymember Fong, and their dedicated teams for their visionary leadership, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to advancing this important legislation 🙌🏽

We also want to uplift the student advocates whose voices were instrumental in raising awareness of the importance of HSIs and AANAPISIs in their academic journeys. Special shout-out to our very own Banana Slug, Francisco Ornelas @ucscivp whose powerful testimonio reminded everyone of the profound impact that inclusive, culturally responsive programs and services have on student retention, belonging, and long-term success 📚🤝🏽

Proud to see our Banana Slugs leading the charge and making their voices heard at the highest levels of state government! 📣💛💙
