Dental school can make it feel like every career decision has to be made right now.

During D1, I felt that pressure. Preclinical was hard, and I wasn’t sure the traditional path matched why I chose dentistry: caring for patients where oral and overall health meet.

When I applied, I had a vision of becoming a dentist-scientist. This year taught me that doesn’t have to mean one set track or waiting until after graduation. For me, it meant taking real steps toward that vision now.

So I spent a year working alongside physicians, data scientists, and researchers whose training looked nothing like mine. I was often one of the few dental voices in the room. Instead of holding me back, that perspective became what I had to offer. It gave me the confidence to take on problems bigger than I would have on my own.

What I’d tell my D1 self:
→ Taking time to explore isn’t falling behind.
→ Ask for help early. The right mentors will help you see the questions worth asking.
→ Your path doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.

I’m back as a D2 now, still building toward that vision, and grateful UCSF had the support in place to make this year possible.
