University & College Union at Ulster University. Supporting members’ jobs, conditions, pensions & resisting marketisation of higher education.

Ulster University recently published plans for a voluntary redundancy scheme for 450 staff. The university reports an operating deficit of £20.2 million in 2025 as the reasoning behind this decision. While last year Ulster reported an income of £304 million, the uni has pointed to declining international student revenues and capped domestic fees as the cause of their profit problem.

Regardless, the answer to saving money has been to cut their workforce by around 14%. While the redundancy scheme was initiated as voluntary, management has not ruled out compulsory redundancies if their quota is not met and has also failed to rule out that cuts could exceed the initial 450.

Staff are at the heart of our university. In 2024, Ulster won “University of the Year”, this prestigious award could not have been won without the hardworking staff at this university. Yet today many are having to keep up with increasing demands to their workloads while feeling the pressure of further cuts.

Trade unions like the University and College Union (UCU) have been on the frontline of resisting these cuts. While management continues to push the narrative that these cuts are unavoidable, the union has highlighted how serious a threat this is to education quality and future sustainability of the university.

🚌 Public Transport Matters | Say No to Translink Cuts

NIPSA members will be taking part in a demonstration this Friday to oppose proposed cuts to public transport services.

The planned changes include reduced late-night services, increased fares for some passengers and the removal of certain ticket options.

These proposals will impact workers, students and communities who rely on affordable, accessible public transport every day.

💪Students and staff are stronger together 💪

NUS-USI stands in solidarity with Ulster University staff facing continued uncertainty over job losses and the potential threat of compulsory redundancies.

Cutting staff and courses while asking students to pay more is not the answer.

Higher education in Northern Ireland needs sustainable, long-term reform that protects jobs, protects students and protects the future of our institutions.

Solidarity with UCU, UNISON and Unite, and with all staff affected.

Still silence from DUP whose MLAs benefit from huge wages and contract perks at Stormont paid for by tax payers while seeking to deny the extension of basic rights to everyone else! Write to your MLA! This bill is about extending basic workers rights that other workers in the UK already have. Employers had plenty of time to consult on the content of the bill do not allow the DUP to act as a veto on behalf of business interests. Act today!
