To say this program changed me is an understatement. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be part of something bigger than myself. Thank you to Habitat for Humanity for teaching me so many new things, like how to use a hammer (don’t ask) and for opening my eyes to the realities of the world around me.

Throughout the week, I met so many people, each with different perspectives, yet we were all united by one shared goal: to serve and support the community. As the days went on and I connected more deeply with my peers, fellow volunteers, and community members, my understanding of housing insecurity began to shift.

This experience challenged me, inspired me, and ultimately changed the way I see both service and the world around me.

UDaB: Take 2

This spring break I got the opportunity to lead a UDaB program to NC to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. We had such an amazing team this year that’s it’s hard to believe the week is already over but I know for sure that the memories will last a lifetime.

So amazing to see the impact the we contributed to for the community and the impact the community had on all of us! Cannot wait for what’s next!

UDᴀB x Cape Fear 2026 🛠

Over spring break, I volunteered with University of Delaware Alternative Breaks on a service program to Wilmington, North Carolina, where we partnered with Habitat for Humanity to battle housing insecurity.

I'm so honored to have experienced this week of service with all of the hardworking & selfless participants. I can say honestly that this week has changed me forever and will greatly impact how I view others, how I view the world, and how I will give back and serve the community around me.

In just a few days, I formed strong bonds with both my fellow participants, as well as the volunteers working with Habitat for Humanity. The participants and site leads quickly became like family, and the volunteers became my mentors. Each person came from a different background and carries their own burdens, but these differences were set aside to form a mutually beneficial environment of service and helping others. Witnessing the overwhelming amount of humility and love that flows through this community brought me and many others to tears.

This opportunity has shaped me in ways I am still discovering. The personal and relational growth I gained this week is invaluable, and I will carry the lessons I learned forever. I am beyond grateful to UDᴀB for offering this amazing program, and I am so proud and thankful for every person who gave up their break to serve this community.

This program would not have been the same without every individual seeking to make a difference in this way. If you looking for more ways to volunteer or serve, this is your sign.

This week I was so beyond lucky to spend my spring break in Washington, D.C. on another UDAB program working at Bread for the City. Bread for the City is an incredible nonprofit organization that supports low-income DC residents with food, clothing, medical care, and legal/social services, and getting to be even a small part of that work was incredibly meaningful and rewarding. This wonderful experience reflected mutually beneficial service beautifully. Connection, learning, and shared human interaction. Working with the most amazing community members made it clear that even in addressing something as complex as food insecurity, small actions can still help ease that burden. There’s real value in simple human interaction, something as basic as being treated with kindness can meaningfully shape someone’s experience.

I’m so incredibly grateful for my friends that I cherish with me whole entire heart and soul and each and every memory made together and made this week one of the best weeks to ever exist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! going into my first @udabreaks program, i was beyond nervous. as a freshman, i had obviously never attended one before. i had so many questions - what would my site leads be like? who would i be going with, and would we get along? what if i didn't have the right skills for the work we were doing? what if i couldn't be of any real help?

all of that changed faster than i ever could have expected. i had two amazing site leads, a wonderful faculty advisor, and ten awesome peers by my side all week. we had so much fun, learned so many new skills, and helped some wonderful people in jonesville, virginia.

thank you to peter and mary for being the best site leads i could've asked for. thank you to jenn for being an amazing advisor and making me laugh all week. thank you to my work crew at mellow moose for doing amazing work inside and outside. thank you to veronica, who brought us an amazing dinner. thank you to alex, who i unfortunately don't have any photos of, for helping us and teaching us so much. thank you to the families we served for welcoming us, fourteen strangers, into your homes. thank you to @appservproject for welcoming us and being amazing hosts.
