Following curiosity across disciplines 🌍

Every Blue Hen’s journey is different, but each one is shaped by growth, discovery and purpose. As we celebrate the University of Delaware Class of 2026, we’re proud to highlight how these graduates have evolved from their first days on campus to where they are now.

“I was still figuring out my interests when I came to UD. Now, I am graduating with two degrees in subjects I love.” - Helen Crowley

Student Spotlight: Meet Abigail McGraw!

Abigail received her Bachelors of Science in Environmental Science from UD in the spring of 2024 and started her Master's in Geology the following fall. She is currently a student in Dr. Holly Michael’s hydrogeology lab, working on understanding the drivers and dynamics at marsh-upland boundaries. Abigail uses a combination of remote sensing and 2D and 3D surface and groundwater models to understand how the geomorphology of marshes and their upland environments impact marsh migration in the Chesapeake Bay region. Her work aims to identify how marshes respond to changes in sea level and increased salinity and saturation in their upland environments.

Meet DENIN Affiliate David Wunsch!

Geologist David Wunsch is the director of the Delaware Geological Survey (DGS), which conducts geologic, hydrologic, and natural hazard research and services. He formerly directed New Hampshire’s Geological Survey and managed several projects at Kentucky’s Geological Survey. Wunsch’s vast contributions to geology have earned him a variety of honors and awards, most recently receiving the American Water Resources Association’s Henry P. Caulfield Jr. Award for Exemplary Contributions to National Water Policy. He was honored for his work in developing the National Groundwater Monitoring Network, a decade-long effort requiring congressional testimony and the unification of many state agencies.

Wunsch has overseen many projects across his fourteen years as DGS Director. In Southern Delaware, where 90% of the water supply is extracted from underground aquifers, he has facilitated a wide expansion of groundwater monitoring network infrastructure. Data and resources from these efforts have supported multiple DENIN research projects. The DGS works closely with the State to inform their beach replenishment projects, and collaborates with the US Geological Survey on stream- and tide-gauging projects, crucial for drought and flood prediction. Wunsch is retiring this summer, wrapping up an impressive body of work that has served as the basis for better environmental resilience and natural resource management nationwide.

More than 5.5 km of sedimentary records drilled at the 6 Sites of #IODP Expedition #exp403 (Fram Strait in the Arctic) were sub-sampled (22,500 individual samples) to be studied by this multidisciplinary team of international scientists in the Bremen Core Repository @marum_uni_bremen.

Happy to have sailed the @joides_resolution representing @united_states.of.america supported by @nsfgov and #USSSP representing @udelaware @udearthsci , proud to be part of this project and excited about the next steps and outcomes of this investigation. This is a crucial time to share this photo to remind everyone science is important. #keepdrilling

First day of Fall 2024 at @udelaware after a productive summer spend on IODP #exp403 as a shipboard scientist. Learned a lot and made new collaborations and had a great time under 24 hour Arctic sunlit days. I am grateful for Graduate College for awarding me with the UD Doctoral Fellowship for Excellence for the academic year 2024/2025. Anticipating great science to be engaged and determined to achieve all the goals. 🤞🏼🙂#phdlife #udel #ceoe #womeninearthscience #doctoralfellowship @udelaware @udearthsci @joides_resolution @nsfgov
