This was my first ADCC match ever. It was considered one of the best matches of ADCC 2015, and the day I learned that the opening doesn’t get to write the ending.

Three months of the hardest camp of my life for the debut I had been chasing since my childhood. I walked out thinking I knew the guy well, since I had beaten him at brown belt in the Brazilian No Gi Nationals, and he went to that ADCC as a short-notice replacement. I underestimated him. It was a mistake and an important lesson learned. Every match is a different match, and for that one he came in hungry and ready.

Bad start for me. Real bad. My family, my friends, teammates, everyone was right there watching while my first match in the -88kg bracket almost ended with a choke before it started.
Those are the moments. You either break or you thrive.
I thrived.

That fight shocked me awake. I survived the worst possible start and turned things around. Mentally, everything else in the bracket felt easier after that. I went out and won the whole thing. It also showed me how wild and unpredictable ADCC is, anything can happen, so you’d better show up ready. 👊

I remember the 2014 @ibjjf No-Gi Worlds like it was yesterday. It was my first time competing there as a black belt, and I made it to the finals of my weight class and the absolute. Across from me was Keenan Cornelius, someone everyone saw as the future of our sport. We had met before in the gi, where he beat me on points, so this one felt personal.

To add fuel to my fire, when they were making the brackets, a leader from another team called me a nobody in No-Gi and said I wouldn’t go far. My professor, @caioterrabjj and I already knew what I could do. We didn’t need outside permission. We just needed the chance to show it.

When the match ended, I remember yelling, “Am I a nobody now?” Caio looked at me and said something I’ve never forgotten: “You were a nobody to them. This doesn’t change anything, because we already knew you were a champion before you stepped on that mat. This confirms it.”

Don’t let other people’s limitations become your own; this is your story, not theirs. That was my first big No-Gi title; that day, the world saw what I always believed: I am a champion.

Still grateful for the people who saw it first.
