Where is Miss UF 1979? 👀👑

That’s a question I never expected to be asking!

While looking through last year’s Miss University of Florida program, I noticed something that I couldn’t stop thinking about: there were blank spaces in our history.

So I started digging. 🔎🐊

Along the way, I’ve been able to uncover several Forever Miss UFs whose names were missing from our surviving historical list—but four women are still missing:

1974 • 1979 • 1982 • 1991

We know the 1979 pageant happened. In fact, the first photo in this post shows 24 women standing on that Miss UF stage in 1979. One of them became Miss University of Florida… but today, we don’t know her name.

And I want to change that.

Every woman who has worn this crown has her own story and her own place in the history of Miss UF. They represented the University of Florida and served Gator Nation before me, and they are Forever Miss UF. 💙🧡

So, Gator Nation, I need your help!

Were you at UF during one of these years? Do you have an old Seminole yearbook, Miss UF program, newspaper clipping, sorority scrapbook, photograph or campus record? Does your mom, grandmother, aunt, friend or sorority sister remember competing?

Please send me anything you find—even a name or a small clue could lead us to her.

And most importantly, SHARE THIS POST. Someone, somewhere, knows these four women.

Let’s put their names back where they belong. 👑🐊

Hey Gators! We’re sharing a centennial feature project to highlight 100 years of Smathers Libraries. The Libraries impact on campus stretches far and wide but can sometimes be hard to visualize. This photo story showcases archival photos from the University Digital Collections. Projected onto iconic UF landmarks, they remind us that the Libraries illuminate excellence everywhere. As we project our past and bring memories to life, we illuminate the future and look towards the continued success of the Gator Nation. 📸🐊

Y is for... Yearbooks!

The UF Yearbooks Collection contains yearbooks from the University of Florida held in the University Archives.

The first University of Florida yearbook was published in 1910. Originally the editors of the yearbook and those of the Florida Alligator were elected during the annual student body elections. The yearbook was titled The Seminole, a name given before the football rivalry between the University of Florida and Florida State University. Except for 1944 when the yearbook was not published due to World War II, the Seminole was published annually until 1973. That year, possibly due to financial difficulties and a change in the student culture, the yearbook ceased publication. In 1983, the students again saw the need for a yearbook and published the Tower, renamed after Century Tower. In the 1980s, the Tower became an agency of the Student Government and by 1993 the Tower received annual funding. The Tower was published until 2008 when the yearbook again ceased publication. The publication has been revived yet again in the 2020-2021 academic year and continues to this day. @uftoweryearbook

The lack of a yearbook did not have an immediate impact. However, now it is obvious that the Seminole and the Tower were not just an aide-mémoire for students. They serve as a primary resource for information about student life and campus culture during any given academic year.

Smathers Libraries are SO MUCH MORE than just books!
