Decades ago, two petroglyph boulders were donated to the University of Georgia. Adorned with spiral designs, and other motifs, these boulders are a testament to Georgia's Native American heritage. Over the summer these petroglyphs were moved to permanent homes at the Laboratory of Archaeology. This Friday a very special Coffee and Clay featuring ceramic artist AND Archaeologist Lillian Ondus, #ceramics @ashcoffeeatl @uga.archaeolab @lillianondus

October is international archaeology month so during this workshop we will create stamp designs similar to those seen on Middle Woodland period(600 BC- AD 500) Swift Creek pottery made by Native Americans in Georgia. November is Native American Heritage month so we will continue discussions about the early potters of Georgia and use our October stamps to decorate the vessels we will create in November.

Some visual materials have been shared by the Laboratory of Archaeology , UGA

Black and white line drawings were made by VHB’s lab director, Jera Davis who gave permission to share!

In collaboration with the UGA Archaeology Lab and other partners across the state, we are proud to be a part of the "Many Eyes on the Road to Revolution in Colonial Georgia," funded by a $743,658 National Endowment for the Humanities grant. Through this three-year project, important historical documents and cultural objects will be preserved and digitized through the Digital Library of Georgia. In addition, we will create exhibits at the Georgia Capitol Museum and other historical sites and journey kits that will enable children throughout the state to experience history hands-on in their classrooms.

This June, our Center for Research and Education at Wormsloe hosted students for the archaeology field school. Students learned field and laboratory methods as they investigated precontact and historic sites at CREW and in the surrounding Wormsloe State Historic Site, and they welcomed members of the community for some discussions and hands-on demonstrations. 🎉 Please join us in welcoming two new Archaeological Analysts to the DAACS team! First up -- meet Emma Iracondo.

Emma comes to us fresh from the University of Georgia, where she earned her BA in Anthropology and Classics. Over the past three years, she honed her skills as a Laboratory Technician at the UGA Laboratory of Archaeology. She focused on rehousing and cataloging coastal Georgia collections and developed a passion for working with databases and the preserving legacy collections.

Emma is especially looking forward to diving into colonoware research (we love the enthusiasm!), and has already made it clear that she's going to feel right at home with us.

When she's not archiving, you might find Emma in the kitchen baking something delicious or drawing something fun. She's also on a mission to master crocheting in 2026 — currently at scarf level, but we believe in her! 🧶

Welcome Emma -- we're so pleased to have you on-board. Stay tuned to learn more about Chiara Torrini, our other new analyst, later this week.

New research is reshaping what we know about Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park. A UGA-led, collaborative study suggests parts of the site were occupied later and more continuously than previously believed, underscoring Ocmulgee’s long-standing importance to the Muscogee Nation. The findings highlight how public architecture, archaeology and community history come together to deepen our understanding of the past.

📖 Word of the Day | Palabra del Día
After archaeologists finish Shovel Test Pit (STP) surveys, the next step is often opening test units (unidades de sondeo). These small squares help confirm what STPs revealed and guide where bigger excavations should happen. 🏺

Después de completar los sondeos con pala (STP), el siguiente paso suele ser abrir unidades de sondeo (test units). Estas pequeñas excavaciones confirman lo que revelaron los STP y orientan dónde deben realizarse excavaciones más grandes. 🏺

Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park is a sacred site, and before any future foundation goes up, archaeologists spend time excavating a site first to honor the stories of its ancestors.
For the future Archaeological Research Facility and archaeologists spent careful time excavating the site ⛏️. Each Thursday, public tours brought visitors into the process to offering a chance to see soil sampling, artifact recovery, and the careful work of archaeology up close 🔍. This excavation preserved what was in the ground before construction, but also created space for the community to connect with the history that surrounds them🌍✨.
