Seeing the sacred in the everyday✨

Lamar Dodd School of Art MFA student Phoebe-Agnès Sinclair recently celebrated the opening of The Living Light, an exhibition exploring how divine presence can be found in familiar people, objects, and environments. Through her work, Sinclair invites viewers to slow down and reconsider the relationship between the visible world and the mysterious.

Swipe for a look at the opening reception, and visit the Department of Religion’s Religious Art Gallery to experience Sinclair's work in person.

When people become data points, who speaks for human dignity?

Franklin Ph.D. candidate Blessing Temitope Adewuyi is using her research to ask hard questions about AI, biotechnology, and what it means to be human.

From southwestern Nigeria to UGA, she will be the first in her family to earn a Ph.D. Her work connects ethics, religion, and science, with a focus on how emerging technologies shape identity and values.

“Human beings are more than a data set.”

As she graduates, she’s focused on one goal: making sure innovation serves people, not the other way around. Read more about her journey: https://www.franklin.uga.edu/news/stories/2026/when-people-become-data-points-phd-candidates-call-ethical-guardrails-biotech-and

Is America becoming more of a religious country or moving further from it?

This was one of the questions during “Faith in America,” a panel exploring topics including history, media and modern religious life.

Students in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication’s religion reporting class held the panel on April 7, ahead of America’s 250th anniversary. We filmed it in the Grady College news studio in the Journalism Building.

Panelists also answered these questions:

Are people of faith correctly portrayed in film and TV today? Do people who are religious feel safe in this country? How much is religion intertwined in your everyday life? Why did the founding documents mention religion?

I had the privilege of giving Chief Justice Harold Melton (who served 16 years on the Supreme Court of Georgia) a tour of the Religion Department after his lunch talk entitled, “Justice and Compassion: How Do the Two Coexist?” He explored the real tension judges face: the call to impartiality and fidelity to the law, alongside the Christian commitment to compassion for the poor, the immigrant, and the marginalized. I left encouraged by his thoughtful, faith-informed approach to holding both callings together.

Today's Special Collections Fellows feature is on Amanda Walls from the department of religion. Here's what she said:

Q: What has been your favorite special collections item or group of items to use in teaching?

A: The Cindy Karp collection of Postcards from early 20th century Poland (Hebrew and Yiddish)

Q: Why?

A: I love translating and analyzing texts with students. The postcards present an opportunity to examine candid, personal messages from unknown authors from the past. We don’t have much information about these items’ provenance, so each one is a revelation. And they pose interesting interpretive challenges. There are many different handwritings in the collection, each representing individual personalities and writing quirks (i.e., abbreviations, non-standard spellings and working vocabularies comprised of words of various derivation). The beautiful scrawl is irregular, often compressed and difficult to read. Sometimes, letters run into each other; so do ends and beginnings of words. Deciphering these messages is painstaking, rewarding, and fun.

Q: How do students respond to or what do they take from the experience of working closely with special collections materials?

A: Most students experience the joy of discovery. When they find historical objects that appeal to their interests they have a wow, I didn’t know that kind of experience that connects them to their campus and what they are learning in the class and in their lives.

The due date for applications to become a part of the next cohor tis Jan. 16. Find out more on our website.
