Students in our Principles and Practices of Historic Preservation course took to the Georgia Museum of Art to see the new Edmonia Lewis exhibition!

Being the first sculptor of both Black and Indigenous descent to achieve national recognition, Edmonia Lewis broke racial and gender barriers practicing her craft in the mid-nineteenth century.

The MHP Program's very own Amy Jones Abbe worked to restore one of Lewis' pieces, Cupid Caught, and took part in a fascinating video about the sculpture!

If you'd like to learn more, Amy will be presenting her work and discussing with one of the curators at a panel lecture hosted by the Georgia Museum of Art on November 6th at 2:30pm.

This Sunday, October 18th, seven of the historic neighborhoods in Athens will be transformed into a widespread music venue with over 200 performances! For the fourth year in a row, @dr._k.marages has facilitated a collaboration between the UGA MHP Program and Historic Athens. Creating a project for students in her Vernacular Architecture course, Dr. Marages taught the intricacies of house history research through deeds, aerial photos, Sanborn maps, and historic newspapers. Hoping to tell the story of some participating buildings, their residents, and their part in Athens's history, students created a short description to be printed onto yard signs and placed at the house of their choosing.

A friendly sign design competition in our Basic Preservation Graphics course crowned Marissa Splendore, a first year MHP student, the winner! Keep an eye out for student-made posters while you enjoy Porchfest performances, and be sure to scan the QR codes to learn more about the history of other houses around Athens.

MHP students will also be leading tours on the Historic Athens trolley throughout the day. Feel free to hop on and off at trolley stops along the route to learn more about Athens History!

Today, our 1st year MLA students presented their design proposals for the redesign of Denmark Hall’s courtyard, exploring how landscape architecture can honor the past while envisioning a more sustainable future. From celebrating the building’s rich history to incorporating unique architectural features and sustainable design strategies, each proposal offered a fresh perspective on transforming this campus space.

What do forestry, conservation, preservation, and landscape design have in common?

While researching Frederick Billings, I discovered that he and many of his contemporaries saw these pursuits as part of a larger vision for the American landscape.
I came to call this vision the “landscape architecture ideal.”

This idea became the foundation of my forthcoming book, Frederick Billings and the Landscape Architecture Ideal, arriving November 15th.

Do you want to volunteer for Experience UGA? Swipe to find out how!

As a part of their Experience UGA the Clarke County High School 10th grade students will receive a walking tour of North Campus with stops at Hunter-Holmes Building, Herty Field, Founders Memorial Garden, and President’s Garden.

Swipe to learn more about each stop that we need help with!

During the Herty Field activity, CED students lead a Coach Herty/Kirby Smart-inspired skit to teach CCSD students about the history of Herty field (as the site of UGA’s first football game to a parking lot to a now-commemorative park, thanks to a team of landscape architects and historians).

The CCSD students learn about the importance of historic gardens through the design and preservation of the Founders Memorial Garden by touring around the garden.

Taking place at the President’s Garden, students participate in creating a web of connections between pollinators and plants to learn about ecology and planting design.

If you don’t see anything that sparks your interest, but you still want to help out with Experience UGA, we have a spot for you!
