📚GSC Book Talk featuring…Queer in a Legal Sense: Brown Citizenship and Other Lawful Fictions by José A. de la Garza Valenzuela 🌈📖 📆 When: Tuesday, October 20th, 2026 ⏰ Time: 3:00PM-4:30PM 📍Where: UIC Richard J. Daley Library, Room 1-470 (801 S. Morgan St. Chicago, IL 60607) ❗Free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.   💬 In this talk, José A. de la Garza Valenzuela (Assistant Professor in the Department of Latina/o Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) traces the legal and literary histories of the new legal grammars of U.S Citizenship in an introduction to his recently published book, Queer in a Legal Sense: Brown Citizenship and Other Lawful Fictions. Analyzing a legal corpus narrowly codifying sex and gender against a gay Chicanx literary tradition challenging the terms on which queer and Chicanx political movements sought what he terms “brown citizenship,” Dr. de la Garza Valenzuela interrogates the “lawful fictions” through which we have and continue to understand being a citizen at each other’s expense. 🦋 This program is part of the Gender and Sexuality Center’s “Queer and Trans Latine Liberation” Theme in honor of the UIC Latino Cultural Center’s 50th Anniversary. 🫂 The UIC Richard J. Daley Library is wheelchair accessible. Join the Department of Classics and Mediterranean Studies for a lecture by Dr. Najee Olya on Wednesday, September 23 at the Institute for the Humanities! Dr. Olya will present "These Peoples Were All 'Ethiopians'": Ancient Greek Images of Africans between Past and Present. 📆 Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 4pm at @uichumanities —— Ancient Greek art is preoccupied with a variety of subjects, both mythological and quotidian. Across a diverse range of media including vase-painting, sculpture, coinage, and more, images of gods, heroes, and monsters appear along with depictions of domestic life, revelry, warfare, and peoples from around the world as the Greeks knew it. Among these foreign yet familiar peoples were Africans, who appear in the iconographic repertoire beginning in the sixth century BCE. Visualizations of Africans in particular have, since the nineteenth century, attracted significant interest from classical scholars, but their analyses have often used an anachronistic interpretative lens that transports modern ideas about race and difference into the distant past. This lecture explores the varieties of representations of Africans in ancient Greek art by situating them in their ancient and modern contexts: as artifacts with specific functions and viewers/users in antiquity, and as objects implicated in discourses on race and Blackness in classical scholarship. Flyer with Greek vase. Text includes description of event (included in photo caption)

Join us for an afternoon with Black feminist disability studies scholar Anna LaQuawn Hinton, in celebration of her recent book, Refusing to Be Made Whole: Disability in Black Women’s Writing! Wednesday, Oct 7, 3:00-5:00pm CT UIC Institute for the Humanities, BSB 153 and Online on Zoom About the book: In reading canonical and lesser-known works by authors like Toni Cade Bambara, Gayl Jones, Gloria Naylor, Ntozake Shange, Audre Lorde, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, Octavia Butler, Sapphire, and Sarah E. Wright, Hinton pushes existing conversations in Black feminist disability studies to reckon with the role of Africanist spiritual understandings of wholeness. Hinton tracks how literary works by Black women writers attend to the debilitating and harmful effects of racist-sexist violence while also offering responses to such harm. Grounded in Africanist spiritual practices, these responses ask readers to radically shift away from a disabled/nondisabled binary, positing disability or imperfection as a key element for conceptualizing the human. Hinton develops a new concept, bodymindspirit, as a tool for reading the work of Black women writers who engage disability, a concept acknowledging body, mind, and spirit as inextricable from one another. Washieka Torres will join us as a respondent. This event is sponsored by the UIC Disability Cultural Center, Gender & Women’s Studies (@uicgws ), Disability and Human Development, Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy(@irrppuic ), English (@uicenglishdept ),Black Studies, Black Cultural Center, Gender & Sexuality Center, Women’s Leadership & Resource Center, Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities and Institute for the Humanities. For full access information and event details, please refer to the event page (linked in bio)! Image description in comments! A blue and green graphic with white text features the cover of Refusing to Be Made Whole, which has an abstracted profile of a head looking toward the sky with radiating lines that resemble a seashell. Below is a portrait of Hinton, a smiling Black woman with an orange shirt and glasses. There are icons for captioning, ASL, and masking indoors, and a list of sponsors along the bottom.
