I had a wonderful time in Chicago last week! I had the opportunity to present my research to photo students at UIC and got to link up with some of my folks. Thanks for the invitation to your lovely campus, Eileen!

🎨 For the last two years, eight students graduating this spring from UIC’s @uicmfa program have painted, filmed, built and created over countless hours in their studios above UIC @gallery400.

When the students, from around the world, weren’t making art in their UIC-provided studio space or attending classes, they were teaching art to undergraduates.

Visit the link in our bio to learn more about the @uicsaah MFA cohort, and view an exhibition of their artwork opening TONIGHT from 6 to 9 p.m., now through May 9 at @gallery400!

UIC MFA 2026 candidate Elias Mendel will be presenting a performance piece 'Dear Beetroot' on the opening night of the thesis show, April 7th.

This piece concerns his dialogue with beetroot, a found letter and a dancer from his family's archive, Martha.

Mendel will draw, translate, dance and cook beets.

Notable Alum 🎓: Kirsten Leenaars – MFA’07 Studio Arts

We’re thrilled to celebrate alumna @kirsten_leenaars, whose decade-long documentary project, Let the Real World In, is on view as a 12-channel video installation at the @haggertymuseum in Milwaukee through May 16, 2026.

The project follows a group of Milwaukee youth over ten years—from summer programs in 2016 to casting their first votes in 2024—exploring resilience, creativity, and civic engagement in a turbulent world. Kirsten’s work captures their friendships, care, and collective hope, offering an intimate and powerful portrait of coming of age amid social and political challenges.

UIC congratulates Kirsten on this milestone and her remarkable contributions to documentary and immersive art!

Incomplete Copy of o (In company of an index): A selected rereading of an unresolved translated paradox.

2023-2025, ongoing

1. This is constructed by the one, who put words in one’s mouth.
2. This is about writing oneself off—
3. This is what my vocabulary did to me.
4. This is about the two “i”s in “olivier”; this is why I use they/them pronouns.
5. This is all borrowed: time, language, gender, bodies, selves.
6. This is words wording themselves into words.
7. This is on languaging.
8. This is a (body) paragraph.
9. This is, in fact, a paratext.
10. This is a syntax that is following you.
11. This is unfolding…this is an unfolding.
12. This is a pleasurable foreword.
13. This is a bibliography that yearns to undress itself.
14. This is a contemplation on tautological occurrences. Eternal return.
15. This is on turning (its/my) back in legibility with/as a gesture.
16. … Marking (something) in its most elusive moment. Betray me!!!
This is a desire to abandon myselves.

1 incomplete conversation with o: 2-part rereading
🛎️
This is nothing, just a rereading.
[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[———————
This is an incomplete conversation constructed by you and o, who (will) put words in each other’s mouths, it might—or might not—fill the whole timeslot.
—How would you like to position yourself with texts?
—When do you want to whisper texts into fragmented sentences?
—Do you want to edit yourself out of words?
—How would you like a foreword to pleasure you?
Will you intertwine yourself with a textual affair?
….
An intertwinement: annotate and arrange, reannotate and rearrange: it is an unfolding index that wants to speak but—words just don’t come easy.
…..
An “o” that o—what do y(o)u mean by that? —Let’s reread…

Come over, bring nothing, 9th April, 2:30pm. Pass the word.

We are excited to welcome you back with this years MFA Thesis Show: The Closest to the Future We Ever Got, now on view through April 26th.

The artists in this exhibition engage with distinct lines of investigation. Among the works presented are meditations, explosions, estrangements, and criticisms. Holding space for contradiction, they function on their own terms while pointing to broader geographic, temporal, social, and theoretical contexts. Some works greet you like they want to help, others pull you into their immersive conditions, and a few just hope you’ll sit with them for a while. Amidst uncertain realities, there is no time for endings, only bold gestures forward.

Throughout the month, each of the contributing artists will be holding talks and activations.

Join us tomorrow, Wednesday April 2nd, 2025, for our first talk with artists Sheldon Till-Campbell and Zulkhairi Zulkiflee. They will focus on their respective practices, which intersect intuitive and affective engagements with place and phenomena. In conversation with Professor Dan Peterman, they will discuss their approaches to art making, which often prioritize perception and sense-making.
