I-O-W-A 🥹

I was so blissfully naive when I arrived at 18 years old, convinced my life was going to unfold exactly how it played out in my dreams. Coming back to Iowa City last week, I was reminded of that girl. I recognized her in all the students who sat in the classrooms I once occupied, on the campus I once called home. It was such an honor to talk with them, not because I have it all figured out or because I had something profound to share but because I don’t. After all of it, after getting the dream job I’m still a work in progress! I still wake up certain mornings wondering WTH I’m doing, if I’m good enough and what’s next. The only difference between who I was then and who I am now is experience. So, what I tried to say in last week’s keynote that I’ll put more plainly here is there is no cheat code for success. It’s a compilation of uncertainties, missteps and heartbreaks with triumphs sprinkled in to keep you going. It’s life. If you take anything away from my path, I hope it’s a desire to dive head first into the mistakes, the redirections, the “failures.” The scars they leave will bring you closer to yourself and that’s when the magic happens. When your understanding of who you are is stronger than the fear of who you’re not. The journalism industry needs your voices! Be bold. Be fearless. Be curious. And most importantly, be you.
