The Main Library Gallery's current exhibition, "It’s Been Wonderful Knowing You: Wildlife Conservation and Advocacy Through the Lens of Jay N. “Ding” Darling" features some of the Museum of Natural History's very own ducks! 📚

Cindy helped deliver the ducks and performed a few touch-ups. They look wonderful on display in this exhibit celebrating conservation and environmental advocacy.

Make sure to check out the exhibition before it closes on December 18th! 🦆

Ding Darling: How Art Shapes a Message
A Pop-Up Exhibit from the @uiowalibraries

Translating a story from the pages of a novel into a format suitable for the silver screen is a common form of adaptation, but this practice can also apply to an artist’s commentary on real life. Political cartoons adapt topics and issues relevant to current events into narrative illustrations that anyone can understand. Iowa political cartoonist Jay N. “Ding” Darling (1876–1962) brought his observations and sharp, clever satire to the pages of The Des Moines Register and newspapers across the country during his career.

Curated by Cecil Campbell and featuring facsimile materials from
@uispeccoll, this exhibit shows examples of Darling’s cartoons and explores how art shapes the messages it sends.

This pop-up is in connection with It’s Been Wonderful Knowing You: Wildlife
Conservation and Advocacy Through the Lens of Jay N. “Ding” Darling, an exhibit
currently on display in the Main Library Gallery at the UI Libraries. The gallery is open
daily to the public.

Location: FilmScene at the Chauncey
Free and open to the public

Join us on Thursday, Oct. 22, for our annual Bibliophiles lecture, featuring Dr. Melissa Tedone, co-founder of the Poison Book Project. The lecture will take place in the Shambaugh Auditorium in the Main Library from 6-7 p.m.

Dr. Tedone will discuss Victorian-era bookbinding and the use of arsenic and heavy metals in historic bookmaking. She'll also talk about the precautions special collections libraries and readers need to take when engaging with these objects.

Iowa’s School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) has earned a second professional accreditation following an international review of its curriculum. The recognition brings students new opportunities to connect with employers and professional communities beyond the United States.

SLIS is the first North American iSchool with a master’s program accredited by both the American Library Association and the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP). The recognition connects students to the United Kingdom’s professional body for librarians, information specialists, and knowledge managers while they are still studying at Iowa.

Great horned owl, Bubo virginianus, Amerika puhusu

My fierce yet enchanting friend! This owl has been really enjoying our backyard in Iowa, being extremely vocal, making the silliest of sounds pretty much every night. İt is however not the most outgoing person, as you oftentimes just end up hopelessly looking for the source of the sound among the the thick foliage with no avail. You only get to see it when it decides to bless you with its presence, and it has only happened thrice or so, in the past 1.5 months I've been here! And all of the photos in this post are from one evening when it decided to reveal itself before the sunlight was totally out of the picture, giving me the chance to get some great photos! I really love this guy.

As for the information section, these guys are the night's Apex predators! Taking down other owl species, including larger ones like the barred owl, or ospreys or hawks is not a challenge for them! They eat pretty much anything they see moving, including porcupines and skunks even! They also don't quite fancy dealing with construction and all, and steal other larger birds' nests instead. And they apparently know how to refrigerate food? Turns out in the winter they can stash their leftover hunt somewhere, leaving it to freeze and thaw it out with their body heats later for consumption! No wonder owls are seen as the symbol of wisdom!
