The Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities (IISC) is partnering with three communities across the State of Iowa for the 2026–2027 academic year: Lyon County, Ottumwa, and Granger. The program provides immersive, real-world education in community planning and policymaking for UI students. Led by teams of faculty from numerous departments, the students offer community partners valuable strategies for development. Projects will include a housing assessment study, regional trail connections, flood mitigation, and Main Street revitalization.

As IISC’s latest community partnerships begin to take shape, the program seeks to expand its faculty network on campus through community-engaged teaching at UI. In the coming months, IISC will continue welcoming input from UI departments across campus to explore how they, too, can develop spring semester courses focused on real-world community development.
