i was working on a project with courses and lectures, and added a “Favourites” feature.

The expected flow was for the user to:
1️⃣ Go to Courses page (tabs: All Courses / Favourites);
2️⃣ Land on All Courses tab;
3️⃣ See all courses;
4️⃣ Change tab to Favoruites if they wanted to.

HOWEVER!! The client insisted on the user to:
1️⃣ Go to Courses page (tabs: All Courses / Favourites);
2️⃣ Land on FAVOURITES tab;
3️⃣ See all favourites;
4️⃣ Navigate to All Courses tab if they wanted to.

i explained there is a huge possibility the users dont have any favourites yet; so it will look like there are no any courses at all, as they wanted to go to Courses page and now see an empty screen... not knowing it is actually a Favourites tab.

The client kept insisting, and so i added a couple of specific empty states messages & buttons to cover the confusion part and make the All courses easily accessible from there.

There are sometimes situations where we cant really do much. This was a constraint that was not communicated previously but we still had to work around it and respect it.

Later we refined it further; repositioned tabs and made it very obvious users were in Favourites, not All Courses.

sooo the point of all this is; the real balance is in understanding the users, respecting stakeholders, and adjusting the experience to reality.

comment below if you have any other specific situations that happened to you! 👇
and hopefully this was helpful 💙

its mostly about making things feel right to the human eye and easy to handle for the human mind :)

a few rules to live by:

1️⃣ invisible UI: if the UX is good enough, the UI should basically disappear. unless its a heavy visual piece, stop overdesigning things that just need to work.
2️⃣ shadows that look natural: please no more default black shadows. use layer blurs and actual light logic so it doesnt look “dirty.”
3️⃣ assume everyone is super lazy: because we are. if it takes more than two brain cells to figure out the next step, you lost.
4️⃣ optical > mathematical: if figma says its centered but it looks crooked, move it manually. trust your eyes, the software doesnt see what we see.
5️⃣ the “apple” secret: use organic corners, not just basic rounded rectangles. its a small detail that makes everything look 10x more premium.

let me know in the comments which one you’d add to the list? 👇
