Living Archives Season One is co-produced by the Stuart Hall Foundation and International Curators Forum with funding from @codemcr and @aceagrams.

In the first episode of Living Archives, visual artists Ingrid Pollard and Rudy Loewe discuss the links between their practices, the relationship between activism and art-making and playful storytelling.

Artist-curator Marlene Smith and artist-filmmaker Beverley Bennett reflect on family, collectivity and memory in the second episode of Living Archives Season One.

Artist-researchers and educators Roshini Kempadoo and Jacob V Joyce exchange ideas around Stuart Hall’s work and legacy, the relationship between the archive and artistic practice and finding allies in history.

Listen to Ajamu and Bernice Mulenga bend time reflecting on their respective approaches to photography, intimacy and working with large institutions in the podcast’s fourth episode.

Photographer Joy Gregory and installation artist Anthea Hamilton share the ways their experiences have influenced their practice, the relationship between education and art-making and what plant life can teach us about being in the world.

Going to Photo London? I’ve curated a special exhibition bringing together a selection of work by women and non-binary artists from @autographabp collection.

Spanning the 1980s to the present ‘We Are the Ones We Have Been Waiting For’ traces a cross-generational lineage of artists who have used photography as a space of resistance and reimagination.

Autograph has one of the UK’s most significant holdings of photography addressing race, identity, representation, human rights and social justice. Many of the works on display were commissioned through Autograph’s ongoing commitment to support artists whose practices challenge dominant histories.

Featuring the work and voices of: Hélène Amouzou, Poulomi Basu, Joy Gregory, Nhu Xuan Hua, Sasha Huber, Mónica de Miranda, Zanele Muholi, Henna Nadeem, Eileen Perrier, Ingrid Pollard, Silvia Rosi, C. Rose Smith, Sabrina Tirvengadum, Lina Iris Viktor and Carrie Mae Weems.✨

DISOBEDIENT SCIENCE | MEET THE ARTIST: INGRID POLLARD

Dr Ingrid Pollard, comes from a community arts background and trained in print making, film and photography. Pollard is a multi-media artist, photographer, researcher and lecturer who has developed a social practice concerned with representation, history and landscape with reference to race, difference and the materiality of lens-based media. Through her practice Pollard uncovers layered histories, making the invisible visible, revealing ‘what we always knew was there’. Pollard has exhibited at Tate Britain, Victoria & Albert Museum & the Photographers Gallery London, NGBK, Berlin, the Caribbean Cultural Centre, New York, the National Art Gallery of Barbados. Recent exhibitions; We have Met Before, (2017), National Gallery of Jamaica, Valentine Days, Autograph ABP (2017), Rivington Place London, Deep Down Body Thirst, Glasgow International, (2018), No Cover Up, Glasgow Women’s Library (2021), Seventeen of Sixty-Eight, BALTIC Newcastle (2019) Three Drops of Blood Thelma Hulbert Gallery (2022), Art Institute of Chicago (2024), Being in Landscape; Futura Gallery Stockholm (2024), Spencer Museum, Kansas University (2025). In 2019 she was a recipient of Baltic Artist’s Award and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Artists Award. She was granted the Freeland Foundation with MK Gallery for the exhibition Carbon Slowly Turning which was nominated for Turner Prize (2022). She was the recipient of the prestigious Hasselblad Laureat Award (2024) and the Century Medal, Royal Photographic Society (2025)

Ingrid Pollard is joining us for Disobedient Science, @pelican.house and @sladeschool, hosted by @radicalecology in partnership with UCL, LAHP and Afterall Research Centre on 7-8 May 2026.

The programme opens pathways for relational practices in art and activism that move beyond inherited scripts of colonial knowledge production and scientific rationalism, revealing instead how thinking and making are never disembodied, and how lived time and space are touched by scales both intimate and immense: geologic, historic, microscopic and planetary.

After a weekend marking International Women’s Day: I’m full with gratitude and respect for all of the incredible women who inspire me through their words, music, art, performance – and their sheer dedication to their creativity and craft (1 of 3).

Thanks to @speaking.volumes & Sharmilla Beezmohun for the invitation to Black Women Speak Volumes, @britishlibrary. What felt like a festival within a single evening – was an inspirational, sharp, funny, heartfelt and insightful conversation between @andioliver @msjoyfrancis & #yvettedwards, deftly chaired by @bernardineevaristo.

The event marked the launch of two brilliant new books Yvette Edwards’ novel: Good, Good Loving and Challenging Britannia, featuring interviews by @msjoyfrancis, with seven other ground-breaking Black women in the arts, including #ingridpollard, @sharon7030, @pauletterandall, @annidom4, #dominiquelegendre, #valeriebloom & #vernawilkins

Thank you to Pratibha Parmar ( @mzpratibha) for her brilliant Maud Sulter Annual lecture, at Glasgow School of Art, in honour of Maud Sulter, her life and creativity. Maud Sulter: Shimmering Golden (“shimmer golden” is a line taken from Sulter’s scholarship re: Black female creativity), is Pratibha’s deeply moving presentation, synthesising Sulter’s polymathic practice, Sulter’s scholarship concerning resistance and invisibility, the scholarship of others (from Christina Sharpe to Gayatri Spivak) and Pratibha’s own critical thinking as a filmmaker and scholar, whose methodology is visual justice.

Pratibha’s interweaving of liminality, hauntology and revelation (including audio of Sulter singing a folk song; a photo of her, as a child, with her maternal grandmother) was heartachingly poignant. It reconfirmed Sulter’s striking prescience, given contemporary dialogues about archiving as a radical practice, countering both invisibility and erasure.

Thank you to Pratibha, for generously including in her lecture my promenade performance lecture: Tracing the Thin Black Line. A collaboration with musician and composer @christellalitras, Tracing the Thin Black Line was part of the programme Connecting Thin Black Lines (June – September 2025), curated by Lubaina Himid @lubainapics and commissioned by the @icalondon.

Great to see and catch up with Ingrid Pollard @ukegirl, whose work was included in Pratibha’s lecture too. Thanks to Pratibha, Shaheen, Glasgow School of Art and The Glasgow Women’s library for the invitation to break bread (injera) together after @mosobglasgow

It’s been such a joy getting to know Pratibha Parmar and Shaheen Haq a little over the past few months — first when (to my delight and complete surprise), they came to Tracing the Thin Black Line; then a kind invitation to Pratibha’s book launch for: Our Eyes as Commonly Tender: Visual Justice in the Filmmaking of Pratibha Parmar. It has been inspirational to revisit A Place of Rage (1991) and see Emergence (1986) and Sari Red (1988).

Ingrid Pollard is one of Britain’s leading contemporary artists working in photography, known for her innovative engagement with photography’s technical processes and its historical role in shaping narratives of power and control. Her work often explores themes of memory, identity, and belonging, explored through studies of landscape, migration, and beauty.

‘FOREST’ features a 1890’s archival image from the The Caribbean Photo Archive that Pollard has painstakingly hand tinted, a tactile and meditative intervention that disrupts the supposed neutrality of the photographic record. This approach echoes her seminal series ‘Pastoral Interlude’ (1988) as well as ‘The Valentine Days’ (2017), both of which depict black figures situated within idyllic rural settings. In ‘FOREST’, Pollard layers past and present to question how spaces are imagined, remembered, and controlled.
