The Royal Scott Double Decker Bus made it into the New York Times “36 hours in Portland, Oregon” by @jamiecattanach. Thank you for adding us to the list, it’s incredibly meaningful.

I thought I was just building a tiny house. Turns out, I was weaving my future—one strand at a time 😉 . All I knew was I wanted a net from loft to loft. I bought it from @treehousesupplies . Now I work there.

Talk about a net win.

I’m applying for a job in an unorthodox way. By video! If you’ve been following this account in any way over the last 8 years, it would be meaningful if you watched this video, wished me luck, or said hello.

Thanks for stopping by!

The Little Library” – A Reflection

We built this little library slowly—
not just in hours, but in seasons.
My wife asked me if I could build it,
and I said yes…
but I just couldn’t get around to it.
So she started pulling together the materials herself—
She had a vision and was excited to have it done.

The first cabinet couldn’t handle the Texas weather—
it was made of MDF.
It needed a stronger base,
a sturdier frame.
And I think… I did too.

at one point after the first cabinet broke Amber wrote a sign that said “excuse our dust”. Luckily I had some good scrap ply in the shop and together we were able to make a nearly exact replica with much stronger material.

We built it on a bench at the front of our property—
a place to stop and sit,
to take a moment,
to leave a book or take a book,
to share a small piece of art.

And even after just a few hours,
a few neighbors had already stopped by.
One left with a handmade bookmark.

It took some perseverance.
But I just love it so much.
Maybe I just needed to finish this project
so I can move on t the next thing.
Who knows?

But I’m really glad we stuck with it.
Amber is the best. Like, really the best.

Trust the Process
When we first looked at this side yard, it was just gravel and potential. The kind of space that could easily be ignored. But something in us said: this could be more. Here’s what we learned as it slowly transformed into a place people now come to unwind.

Tip 1: Ask for help early
I had the idea, but I couldn’t see all the details on my own. That’s when Rodney and Jake stepped in to help sketch the design. And it wasn’t just design — it was energy. Evan, Matt, and Isaac showed up with tools, time, and trust. Bringing people into the process early gave the project momentum and meaning. The vision got sharper because it was shared.

Tip 2: Do the work no one sees
Before anything looked good, we had to strengthen what was underneath. We added plywood over the old wall to improve the structure of the building itself. Then @ameslabs came in and coated it with a waterproofing layer, so we could paint directly on top — and maybe even add a mural one day. It’s the kind of step that makes everything else possible, even if no one ever talks about it.

Tip 3: Build a space that invites joy
Once the bones were in place, we got to add the fun stuff — a pool, a bar, shade overhead. Now this space isn’t just functional, it’s relaxing. It’s a place for people to gather, to breathe, to feel held by the details. It didn’t happen all at once. But now it’s part of the story we’re telling at @thepilothouse.

If you’re mid-project, mid-vision, or just in the middle of figuring it all out—trust the process. And if you need a place to land, we’re here.

In elementary school, while Sally Ride was still living, I had to present on someone from history that I admired. I stood proudly in front of my classmates in a bright orange snowmobiling suit with a giant American flag glued to the shoulder and a helmet under the other arm. I told the class about how Sally had changed the world when she became the first American woman to launch to space. I wanted to be just like her. (Last photo)

It’s so easy to think that each of us couldn’t possibly make a difference. Sally’s legacy shows us that sometimes just following your dreams can have a lasting impact long after you’re gone. I am who I am today in large part because of her.

Attending the Hollywood premiere of the Sally film last night was like walking through some sort of fantastical dream. I laughed and I cried (and cried), I met Sally’s sister Bear, showing her the photo of me dressed as Sally (wish you could have been there Whit!!), and danced the night away at a rooftop space-themed party and all I could think is “Wow, what would Sally think if she could see this?!”

#SALLYfilm by Emmy Award winning Director @xtinatini premieres June 16 on National Geographic. Streaming next day on @disneyplus and @hulu.

It’s live!
After months of building, designing, dreaming—and sharing little glimpses along the way—our newest Airbnb is officially ready for guests.

I could really use your help kicking the algorithm into gear:
• Tap the link in my bio
• Scroll through the photos
• Click around, favorite it, maybe even share it with someone who’d love to stay

Even if you’re not booking, this kind of early interaction tells Airbnb, “hey, people love this!”—and that makes a big difference.

Thank you for following this journey. I can’t wait to host you (or your favorite traveler) soon.

Let’s light this place up.

Discovering stuff: This is what it is.

I think Thomas sees this—whatever this is—not as a destination, but as a practice. A kind of living conversation. One that unfolds in real time, like a trail we’re walking before we even know where it leads.

When we talk about “The Big Picture,” or building new ways of being in dialogue, or just hit record on a conversation—we’re not packaging something polished. We’re exploring. We’re discovering. And I think, for Thomas, the discovery itself is the point.

Thomas and I like to live in the spaces between things. Between people, between thoughts, between what we say and what we mean. I don’t think we are trying to present answers. I think we are trying to stay curious long enough for something more honest to emerge.

So yeah, we’re documenting this. But more than that, I think we’re modeling it. Trying to show what it looks like to not have it all figured out. To listen. To ask better questions. To follow a thread even when we’re not sure where it goes.

And maybe—hopefully—this way of showing up ripples out. Maybe it stirs something in whoever’s watching. Something that says: you can ask your own questions too. You can take the scenic route. You can move slow. You can change.

There’s no tidy conclusion here. Just presence, process, and a kind of trust in where it might all lead.

Did I get that right, Thomas? Have anything to add?

On substack.
