🎃 Halloween’s origins trace back over 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced “sow-in”), a festival marking the end of the harvest season and the start of winter. The Celts, who lived in regions now known as Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated Samhain on the night of October 31. They believed this was when the boundary between the living and the dead blurred, allowing spirits to return to earth. To protect themselves from these spirits, people lit large bonfires and wore costumes, often made of animal heads and skins, to disguise themselves.

When the Roman Empire expanded and eventually conquered Celtic territories, they integrated some of their own festivals with Samhain, particularly the Roman festivals of Feralia (a day to honor the dead) and Pomona (celebrating the goddess of fruit and trees). The apple became associated with Samhain, which some believe is why apple bobbing is a Halloween tradition.

In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as All Saints’ Day, or “All Hallows’ Day,” a day to honor all saints and martyrs. The night before, October 31, became known as All Hallows’ Eve, later shortened to Halloween. All Saints’ Day was intended, in part, to replace Samhain with a Christian holiday, but many of the traditions persisted.

As Irish and Scottish immigrants brought Halloween traditions to North America in the 19th century, the holiday evolved. By the early 20th century, it had grown into a more community-centered holiday with costume parties, trick-or-treating, and decorations. Today, Halloween has grown into a global holiday, especially in the United States, where it’s celebrated with costumes, haunted houses, pumpkin carving, and a focus on both fun and fright. #letaskai #chatgpt #mraicurious - chatGPT👻 #artificialintelligence #halloween #ai #tiktok #fyp
