📚: Tanish Gupta @tanishgupta.2007 🧑‍💻: @ManningCICS Computer Science @umassials 🏠: Delhi, India ❓How would you describe OceanEye? OceanEye is a tool that uses AI to spot and classify trash in ocean and coastline footage. It helps track pollution so we can understand where waste is building up and take action. ❓What inspired you to pursue research at UMass? I wanted to use what I was learning in the classroom to solve problems that actually matter, like protecting the environment, not just build things for the sake of building them. ❓What accomplishment are you most proud of? Building the part of OceanEye that uses Google's Gemini pipeline to look at detected trash and figure out what type of waste it is. Seeing it correctly label real objects felt like a big win. ❓What advice would you give to another UMass student? Don't wait until you feel ready to start a project. You would learn eventually while actually working on the project. A person stands smiling on a grassy area in front of a beach with a view of the ocean and clear blue sky in the background. They are wearing a colorful floral shirt and dark pants. There are small signs and other people visible in the distance.

📚: Rudra Patel @rudrapatel2060 🧑‍💻: @ManningCICS Computer Science @umassials 🏠: Vadodara, Gujarat, India ❓How would you describe OceanEye? OceanEye is a tool to track ocean waste and help people clean the oceans. It democratizes marine conservation by providing grassroots coastal communities with an accessible, low-cost tool to optimize their waste cleanup routes and protect fragile marine ecosystems. ❓What inspired you to pursue research at UMass? Research for me is just that kind of a feeling that comes when you are trying to find something that you don’t know by building upon the steps of others. I feel that being curious to know things and trying to understand different things is the thing that motivated me to pursue research at UMass. ❓What accomplishment are you most proud of? I am most proud of the fact that I could be a part of a team wherein we built something for the common good. ❓What advice would you give to another UMass student? Just be curious to explore and try out new things since that is the best way to learn. A person stands in front of the Old Chapel on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus. Bananas are America’s favorite fruit. Unfortunately, they’re also being put at risk by a new strain of a fungal pathogen. Not to worry, fellow banana lovers—Mahoney Life Science Prize winner and professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, Li-Jun Ma, and her former student Yong Zhang ’19PhD are using genetic sequencing to find strategies for protecting this delicious, weird berry. #UMassMagazine #bananas #Fungalgenomics #fungalresearch @antifungalresearch

From lectures to labs! Karen Giuliano, #UMassNursing professor and co-director of the Elaine Marieb Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation, recently took her honors class on a tour of the Life Science Laboratories behind Skinner Hall! During this visit, students spent time learning about the latest #IVSmartPump systems and how they compare to current technology in use. They also had the opportunity to explore our very own on-campus MRI machine and see the process involved before someone steps inside! Experiences like these remind us why continuous learning is important. 💉🩻 #UMassAmherst #UMass #Amherst @umass #nurseengineer #EMCNEI @umassials @umassemcnei
