Rivers come together at the Confluence, and so did all of you!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the grand re-opening of the Rock Creek Confluence. Whether you checked out the new trails, chatted with our staff, or just soaked in the view, you made the day feel exactly like it should: a community showing up for a place they love.

A huge thank you to Friends of Upper Rock Creek Historic District, Summit Independent Living, and University of Montana Bird Ecology Lab for helping make it all happen.

We hope to see you out there enjoying the area.

Today, the UM birding club got the amazing opportunity to experience a bird banding station in action! We were lucky enough to ruffle some feathers and learn about how birds are researched, and what they can tell us about our environment. The birding club is extremely grateful for @mpg_ranch and @umbirdecologylab for making this incredible experience possible.

Please note: All birds are handled by trained professionals with permits.

Owl season has returned to FLBS!

The @owlresearchinstitute (ORI) started their annual Northern Saw-whet Owl Fall Migration study at Flathead Lake on September 8. The season has already started off strong, with the banding station averaging 10 owls per night (that’s more than in any of last 4 seasons at this site), and ORI biologists have also recently banded their 100th owl at FLBS!

Be sure to follow the Owl Research Institute and FLBS on social media for updates throughout the fall season.

All banding, marking and sampling is being conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the US Geological Survey’s BBL.

**Correction from photo: the event will be held September 26th, not 126th! Sorry for any confusion.**

Big things are happening at the Rock Creek Confluence.

Three years ago, Five Valleys and our partners set out with a big idea: a river park at the Rock Creek Confluence, built for everyone.

Join us for an afternoon celebrating the hard work that made it happen with trail tours, a look at the restoration of Pete’s Cabin, bird science with UM’s Bird Ecology Lab, and more, followed by appetizers, drinks, and a few words from the people behind the project.

When: Saturday, September 26 | 3-6pm
Where: West Side Trailhead, Rock Creek Confluence

Free for all, RSVP to lena@fvlt.org by Sept 23 so we can plan food

BWI? More like Bitterroot Wildlife Internship!
Well, that’s a wrap. Session 2 of BWI has completed its final day and waved goodbye to MPG Ranch… for now💕

This week students explored wildlife observation through (B)ears, studied fresh(W)ater ecology, and were (I)nspired by all things birds and bugs.

Thank you MPG Ranch for being an incredibly learning laboratory, all of our mentors and partners for imparting incredible knowledge upon us all, and to all of the students for making this program as special as it is.

Until next season ✨

Meet Clark the Osprey!

More than 4,000 members of the cam community cast their votes to name Iris's new mate, and Clark emerged as the clear favorite. The name honors the Clark Fork River, which flows alongside the Ospreys' nest in Missoula, Montana.

Here he is delivering a fish to Iris at the nest on May 31.

Tap the link in our bio to see the full voting breakdown, and thanks to everyone who participated!

Small bird, big brain. Black-capped chickadees can remember thousands of food hiding spots—and even adjust their memory capacity with the seasons to survive winter.

Cooper’s Hawk feeding on a pigeon
.
one of the coolest moments of my life behind a camera. I was a junior at the University of Montana, walking back to my dorm after class when I noticed a pile of feathers. Then it hit me—a hawk had just made a kill. I sprinted to the 4th floor, grabbed my Nikon D3500 + Sigma 60–600mm, and ran back to capture this raw, once-in-a-lifetime scene. Nature doesn’t wait—and neither did I. Moments like this are why I picked up a camera.

SHE’S BAAAAAAACK!! Everyone say hi to Iris and her new boyfriend 👋

30 years old.
30+ chicks.
Countless suitors.
Zero interest in slowing down.

Iris is the spotted-eyed queen of the Clark Fork River 👑🦅

She’s outlived the odds, caused literal power outages (iconic behavior), and is still being courted this spring.

Catch her live via the Montana Osprey Project and witness a true comeback story - hers and the river’s.
