Founders Week 2026: Public Servant of the Year Ramsay Koury, DMD

In 2010, Ramsay Koury, DMD, was a dentist who had never thought about becoming a professor, but a trip to Honduras and a nudge from a @UMDentistry student changed the course of his career.

Koury had been inspired to go to dental school while attending Juniata College in central Pennsylvania and accompanying his cousin, Robert Zimmerman, on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. Koury assisted Zimmerman, a dentist, and a team of practitioners for two weeks in providing oral health care services such as tooth extractions.

“After graduating dental school at the University of Pittsburgh, I did many mission trips, mainly to Honduras, enjoying the ability to help others in need,” said Koury, who met five UMSOD students on one of the trips and enjoyed the experience working with them.

“One of the students encouraged me to come and teach at the school,” Koury said. “I had never considered teaching, never wanted to return to a dental school, and did not want to live in a big city again. However, I came in for an interview, worked in a clinic with students, and knew I had found my true calling.”

Koury served as an instructor of operative dentistry for two years as a volunteer member of the UMSOD Dean’s Faculty, then joined UMSOD full time in 2013 after 24 years in private dentistry in the Harrisburg, Pa., area. Over the past decade-plus, he has made his mark not only as a teacher, but also as a mentor and leader of the Mission of Mercy program since 2016. These events provide free oral health care services under faculty supervision.

Koury, who is a clinical assistant professor and director of the Division of General Practice in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry at UMSOD, organizes the events and coordinates student, faculty, resident, and staff involvement at sites across Baltimore, the Eastern Shore, College Park, Southern Maryland, Western Maryland, and Montgomery County.

Week 7 Jaw Surgery Update! 💕

Another week of healing and another milestone! I’m finally getting more feeling back in my face! My upper lip is still numb, I have some lingering swelling, and those regenerating nerves are giving me occasional zaps! ⚡️

I’m slowly getting back to normal chewing AND I’ve officially graduated from my pediatric toothbrush to a big girl toothbrush! 😂 It still feels crazy against my face, but progress is progress!

I also want to give a HUGE shoutout to Dr. Nicholas Wilken and Dr. Amanda Gallagher @agortho for taking such amazing care of me throughout this journey! I’m so grateful for everything they’ve done! ❤️

It’s been a long road, but every little milestone reminds me how far I’ve come. One day, all of this will be a distant memory! 💗

SIX WEEK UPDATE 🎉

And this one comes with the BIGGEST news yet…

I CAN EAT.
I CAN CHEW. 🙌🏼😂

After SIX very long weeks on a strict NO-CHEW diet, I finally got the words I’ve been waiting for…

“You can start chewing.”

And do you know what I chose for my first real meal?

MARYLAND CRABS. 🦀😂

Because after six weeks of not chewing, apparently I wasn’t interested in easing back into things.

I’m still swollen. Still stiff. Still healing.

But I CAN CHEW AGAIN!!!

And sitting there picking crabs and actually being able to eat them felt like the biggest win ever. ❤️

Six weeks down. This was THE milestone I’ve been waiting for.

And those crabs never tasted so good. 🦀❤️

Now text me or DM me, so we can schedule our happy hours or girls’ nights because I’m ready! 😂🦀🍸

WEEK 5 UPDATE 🤍

Finally feeling more like myself!

Five weeks down and ONE more week until I can start gradually adding soft foods back in. 🙌🏼 I never thought I’d be this excited about chewing something. 😂

And two little things that feel like HUGE wins:

🥤 I can use a straw again!
👃🏼 I can blow my nose again!

It’s funny how much you appreciate the little things when you haven’t been able to do them for weeks.

Still some swelling and stiffness, but I’m getting there. One more week! 🩷

🎶 IT’S THE FINAL COUNTDOWNNNN 🎶 😂🙌🏼

5 weeks (almost) post-op and I finally got some GOOD NEWS today!

🥤 I can use a straw again.
👃🏼 I can blow my nose again.
🍴 And next Friday, 9/11, I can FINALLY start chewing soft foods!

After 5 weeks of no chewing, no straws, no nose blowing, sleeping sitting up, swelling, numbness and all the other fun that comes with jaw surgery… THE END IS NEAR. 😂

Still healing. Still swollen. Still numb. But I can finally see the finish line!

Now the important question…

WHAT SHOULD MY FIRST SOFT FOOD BE?! 👇🏼😂
