Two of our undergraduate researchers - Areej and Alex - traveled with faculty to present at the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) Annual Conference held in Portland, Oregon in April. Conference attendees included public health researchers, educators, practitioners, and students from across the country.

Areej Falah (Health Sciences, '27) has worked in Dr. Kelsey Gardiner's Community Health & Nutrition Lab since last summer. The lab researches how to use a community-focused approach to address food and nutrition security across Kansas City. Areej's research focuses on interpreting feedback on the FoodFARMacy initiative's design, a "Food is Medicine" intervention modeled to provide free fresh produce and nutrition education to medically underserved, high-risk populations in KC.

Alex Alonso (Biology, Chemistry, and Health Sciences, '27) also works with Dr. Gardiner. He says attending the conference was "a really valuable experience. I got to present research in a professional public health setting, learn more about how Food is Medicine fits into broader public health work, and see how researchers from other institutions communicate their projects. It was also exciting to represent UMKC and share work connected to Kansas City's local health landscape. I had a really good conversation with a French researcher wanting to get a FiM program going in France!" Alex presented "Food is Medicine in Practice: Developing a Food Landscape Review in the Kansas City Metro." group photo of students and faculty who traveled to SOPHE conference

Lightning Talks! presentations gave a ⚡ flash ⚡ of the brilliant efforts of UMKC's undergraduate researchers, scholars, and artists during the third annual event.

From using AI for cancer screenings, using artifacts to learn about life during WWI, using intervention design to promote healthy behaviors, and more, the six presenters honed their research into 3-minute presentations and received immediate feedback from an interdisciplinary audience of faculty as well as current and future undergraduate researchers.

Tune in to undergraduate research so you can be the first to know the next time lightning strikes!
