The program includes a poster session, keynote from Florence Becot, PhD, and a panel discussion focused on resiliency across high-stress occupations, with particular attention to rural and underserved communities.

It's really hard to believe it's been 10 years.

In many ways, thinking about Philando's murder brings up the same visceral feelings I had when I first heard about it.

The horror.
The powerlessness.
The rage.

Something I shared while delivering the commencement keynote for the @umnsph class of 2022.

It has been a part of my "why" ever since. A reminder that we can't just talk, we must DO. A reason to lean into the discomfort of challenging narratives I have been told and understanding the truth behind narratives that can be hard to hear.

It's also hard to believe it has been 10 years because of how much we are still struggling with & in several ways regressing.

Because of how much indifference to others suffering has been normalized.

Because of the horror that indifference creates, the sense of powerlessness it reveals, & the rage that it fuels.

We don't have to stay indifferent to preventable suffering, and injustice, whether that be at the hands of police in Minneapolis, ICE agents across our country, or the militaries we fund across the world.

We can learn. We can grow. We can change. We can be better.

Philando didn't ask to be that reason for me, just like so many others who have lost their lives at the hands of state violence. But he will forever hold a place in my story and many other's.

Sending peace and love to his family and friends on this day🙏🏾❤️‍🩹

To be honest, sharing a stage with scholars whose work I have admired for years feels a little surreal. I am delighted to share that together with Kadija Ferryman, PhD (John Hopkins University), I will be chairing the panel “Between Invisibility and Exposure: Reconfiguring Visibility in Medicine” at the 18th World Congress of Bioethics (Johannesburg, South Africa, July 2026). #WCB2026

Our panel (8 July, 10:30–12:00) brings together an outstanding group of scholars who explore the ethical and political dimensions of visibility and participation in medicine from different vantage points:

• Melissa Creary, PhD, MPH (University of Michigan) on bounded justice and structural inequities
• Paige Nong (University of Minnesota) on the ethics of health data collection and governance
• Supriya Subramani (University of Sydney) on invisibility, patient agency, and healthcare inequalities in India

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to learn from and engage with such brilliant colleagues, and I am very much looking forward to the conversations this panel will spark.

The Center for Community-Engaged Learning celebrated its 2025-26 graduates of the Community Engagement Scholars Program on May 6, 2026. The Community Engagement Scholars Program (CESP), celebrating 20 years, is a program for students who want to make a commitment to community engagement during their undergraduate experience. Students complete 400 hours of community engagement work, participate in reflective workshops and assignments, and complete a 1 credit senior capstone project. Because of the rigorous nature of the program, students are also recognized by the Board of Regents with a notation on their official transcript and a medal of distinction. Congratulations to these undergrads! #UMNProud CESP Class of 2026
