Only 20 feature films have ever been made in the history of Sudanese cinema. The latest one is a history-making win that deserves a spot on your watchlist: Cotton Queen (2025).

Directed by Suzannah Mirghani, this is the first Sudanese feature film directed by a woman. It is visually stunning, politically sharp, and surprisingly funny, built on a layer of dry, cultural humor.

The story centers on Nafisa, a quiet teenager whose family is trying to arrange her marriage to a wealthy Sudanese businessman who has spent his life abroad. He arrives in a suit, determined to modernize the village with genetically modified cotton seeds. Nafisa, however, is entirely unimpressed. She spends her time writing poetry and secretly crushing on a local boy.

What makes Cotton Queen even more remarkable is the miracle of its production. In 2023, the outbreak of the Sudanese civil war forced the production to flee the country. Instead of giving up, Mirghani relocated the shoot to Egypt, rebuilt the entire village from scratch, and cast Sudanese refugees to bring the story to life.

It is a resilient, beautiful, and deeply human film that serves as a love letter to Sudanese culture.

Laura Twagirayezu shares her thoughts on being Rwandan, remote curation, Africa’s post-colonial realities, and curating Borders and Other Myths at Affinity Gallery.

“I’m very fascinated by how people, how individuals, perceive the world around them! It’s a very internal dimension, as you’ve put it, and this is a personal and intimate part of people that I want to speak to. This curatorial note for me is an invitation to think a little bit more and a little deeper about one’s internal world, one’s personal beliefs, collective beliefs and everything in between – hence the ‘Myths’ in the title of the exhibition.”

Borders & Other Myths

Currently on View / Lagos, Nigeria

Affinity Gallery presents Borders & Other Myths, a group exhibition curated by Laura Twagirayezu, bringing together the practices of six artists: @mansan_artstudio @chigozieobi_, @cortneyherron, @ernest.yankee, @mai_ye, and @mylesigwe.

The exhibition considers borders not only as physical or geographical divisions, but also as ideas that shape how we understand identity, belonging, difference, and connection.

Across their practices, the artists question what appears fixed or singular. The works suggest that identities can contain multiple experiences, while boundaries that seem to separate people can also reveal the connections between them.

The exhibition also asks us to think about who creates the boundaries we inherit, whose stories become attached to them, and what other histories may exist beyond them.

Borders & Other Myths treats the border as something that can be questioned rather than accepted as the end of a story.
