Students in Amanda Sawyer’s NUTR 760 Food Science class held a taste testing session, attended by many students, faculty, staff — and Dean @Nancy_Messonnier!

Student groups were each assigned a health condition and tasked to create a healthy version of a dish that could be enjoyed by someone with that condition.

The dishes were all based on homemade recipes: carrot cake, spinach dip, banana bread and potato soup. Participants were asked to test two different versions of each dish, one of which was modified with healthier ingredients.

Who says public health can't be delicious?! 🍛 🌮 🧆

Gillings School Assistant Professor Dr. Anna Kahkoska and UNC School of Medicine Assistant Professor Dr. Rebecca J. Vitale recently published a paper titled “Life stage transitions for people with type 1 diabetes” in the journal The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology.

🔍The key findings were:
- Type 1 diabetes (T1D) affects people of all ages, and care needs change over time, requiring different levels of support from clinical teams and personal networks across the life course.
- Two major transitions occur across the lifespan in T1D – the shift into emerging adulthood and the transition into older adulthood.
- The article also highlights clinical gaps in clinical care during these transitions and the research needed to support new models of care and peer support during these critical moments.
