The student experience is best understood by listening to students themselves. 🐏🩵

We we're so grateful to have Lukas Caggiano and Olivia Vorhis join the @uncchapelhill Board of Trustees this week to share their Carolina experiences.

From Lukas finding community “wicked far” from home and beginning to hit “Heel Control,” to Olivia navigating academics and finding some of her most meaningful experiences leading @blankcanvas_unc, their stories reminded us that there is no single Carolina experience.

But one thing should be true across all of them: students should have a voice in shaping them.

From the classroom to the Board room, we must lead with the student voice and build Carolina with students, not simply for them.

Great work, Lukas and Olivia, and thanks for joining us!

Hazing prevention isn’t only about responding when something has already gone wrong. It’s about creating groups where people feel like they belong without having to prove themselves, endure something harmful, or stay silent when they are uncomfortable.

Joining, belonging, participating, bonding, celebrating, and leading should all feel safe. As you think about your role in your organization or community, consider:

💭 What is one thing you can do to help all your members feel like they belong without having to "earn" it?

💭 What do you hope new members say about how they were welcomed and treated after their first month in your organization?

💭 What is one tradition, expectation, or habit in your group that might be worth rethinking?

💭 How can you use your role as a leader to make it easier for someone to speak up if something doesn’t feel right?

💭 If you or another member needed help, would you know where to turn?

Creating safer member experiences starts with you. To learn more about hazing prevention and support resources at UNC, stop by the National Hazing Prevention Week Resource Fair this Friday, September 25 from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. in The Pit. CLE credit will be available for undergraduate students.

One of the responsibilities of serving as Student Body President is not only representing the student voice, internally and externally, but leading a team. A team of people!

The same is true for the hundreds of Tar Heels who step up to lead student organizations, chair committees, serve their peers, or simply have dreams of doing so one day.

We should be there to equip our Heels with the durable skills they need to lead well, work with others and make an impact wherever they go.

Thank you, Darrius Barrow, @sllunc, @unchelloheels’s Elizabeth Poindexter for helping us kick off a year-long series dedicated to developing and supporting student leaders across campus.

Elizabeth Poindexter, Executive Director of Communications and Special Projects, walked us through the power of storytelling and branding to strengthen alignment and amplify impact.

If you ask me, when we invest in student leaders, we invest in the future of Carolina. I’m so excited to continue this series!

Everyone has a role in building a safer, more supportive Carolina.

September is National Campus Safety Awareness Month — an opportunity to think about what it takes to create a campus where everyone can learn, work, connect and thrive. At Carolina, safety isn’t the responsibility of just one office, department, or person. We all have a role to play.

That idea is at the heart of It Takes All Heels, Carolina’s violence prevention and safety campaign. The campaign encourages every member of our community to recognize the part they have in creating a safer and more supportive Carolina — before, during and after a concern arises.

To learn more and and see how you can get involved, visit go.unc.edu/campussafetymonth.

Today is International Overdose Awareness Day, a time to pause and recognize the many lives impacted by opioid overdose.

One of the best ways to prevent overdose is to carry Narcan (naloxone) - even if you don't use opioids. You can pick up a free Narcan at Student Wellness, Campus Health Pharmacy, Student Stores Pharmacy, or at one of the @hrc_unc bins around campus.
