Missing our hhe days @unchiphop
I’ve always loved being part of creative/performance communities; theatre, rock band, choirs, a capella groups, the hip hop ensemble, and most recently @jaededofficial <3
I’d love to get back into something (maybe a band or collective idk) with regularly scheduled rehearsals. Anyone with info on groups or looking to collab feel free to message me!

“Find what you love to do, do it as best you can while enjoying every moment, and over time, you’ll have a life philosophy and a plethora of experiences that you’d want to share with others.”

We’re thrilled to welcome Kerwin Young as the new Teaching Assistant Professor of Hip-Hop! Professor Young was on Public Enemy’s production team “The Bomb Squad” from 1989-2017, co-producing several of the group’s albums and solo projects, is a conservatory-trained classical composer, and has served as the Performing Rights Associate for Next Level, the US State Department’s hip-hop cultural exchange program, since 2017.

In addition to Public Enemy, Professor Young has also worked with other iconic artists, including Ice Cube, Eric B & Rakim, Mobb Deep, the 2 Live Crew, MF Doom, and Busta Rhymes. He has composed and produced original songs and scores for feature films, television series, documentaries, commercials, weekly news, and web series. Among his credits are: Euphoria, Do the Right Thing, Green Card, Sister Act 2, Street Fighter, He Got Game, New York Undercover, The Midnight Club, and Power Book III: Raising Kanan. In 2024, Professor Young composed The Five Elements, the world’s first-ever Hip-Hop concerto commissioned by the Association of American Voices and the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music.

This fall Professor Young will teach the Beat Lab and direct the Hip-Hop Ensemble. Register for one of his classes today! Read more about Professor Young in “From ‘The Bomb Squad’ to the Beat Lab.” (link in bio)

RECAP me and @quincy.griffin3 recieved the honor of UNC’s first Hip Hop Scholarship. Being able to be a part of the community built by @rowdylife is a special feeling. Because of him we’ve been able to study Hip Hop, build connections, and do what we love here at the Hill. Long Live Rowdy.

“Even though we’re leaving the department, the department isn’t leaving us. We take these people and this education with us to all these far corners that we’re traveling to. … The thing I’ll treasure above all else, aren’t these skills, it’s you - all my finest friends, all my most valiant mentors. I will treasure them always, and no matter where we go we take each other with us. That, I think, is the great victory of this department and that’s why I’m going to miss you all so very much.” -Marvin Koonce, Class of 2025 Music Commencement Student Speaker

You did it, Class of 2025! We’re still reliving Saturday’s celebration on repeat. The music, community, and all the hard and soft skills learned in your time here at UNC were on full display. As keynote speaker Margo Drakos reminded you, “These [skills you learned here] are very rare capabilities. Remember and trust in your toolbox. … There’s a tendency to think of the arts broadly as the thing that comes after. It is the thing that comes after the peace, after the law, after the politics, after the “real” education. When in reality, the arts stand in the middle of it all. In the glory and the gratitude and the churn of human existence. In the conflict, the pain, and the joy. They are not extra. They are the essence of our humanity. How fortunate we are to have each one of you, the class of 2025.”

Congratulations, Class of 2025! We are so proud of each of you. 👏🎶🩵🐏🎉
