Last night I had the privilege of joining Gazetteer SF’s Chat Room: Food and sharing the story behind UKRAÏNE cookbook.

We talked about food, of course, but also about memory, identity, and what it means to document a country’s culinary traditions while that country is at war. Some of the most meaningful moments of writing this book happened on the road in Ukraine - meeting farmers, cooks, bakers, and home cooks who continue to preserve and evolve our food culture despite unimaginable challenges.

I’m grateful to Olivia Peluso for such a thoughtful conversation and to everyone who came out, listened, asked questions, and shared their own stories. Nights like these remind me that food is never just food. It’s history, culture, resilience, and a way of understanding one another.

Every opportunity to talk about Ukraine, its people, and its cuisine feels like a gift. Thank you for giving me the space to do that. 💙💛
