UNC-Chapel Hill ranks among the best colleges for military-affiliated students! 🩵

We’re proud to share that UNC-Chapel Hill has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as #12 Best College for veterans overall and #5 among public institutions. UNC was also named Top 10 Military Friendly School and Military Spouse Friendly School, earning Gold recognition.

These honors reflect Carolina’s continued commitment to our military-connected community. At the Military and Veteran Student Success Center (MVSSC), we strive to provide the necessary resources, a dedicated staff, and a welcoming community for our military affiliated students.

Yesterday, at Taco Tuesday, we celebrated this recognition with Chancellor Lee Roberts (@uncchancellor), Student Body President Devin Duncan (@sbpdevin), and Dean of Students Desirée Rieckenberg, while discussing how Carolina can continue creating a welcoming environment for those transitioning from military to academic life.

At Carolina, your service is part of your own story, and you do not have to navigate this next chapter alone. Whether you’re a veteran, active-duty service member, dependent, reservist, National Guard member, or ROTC cadet, MVSS is here to support you every step of the way!

Meet Carolina’s Student Veterans of America (SVA) Board! 🩵🇺🇸

We’re proud to introduce this year’s SVA board: President Trevor Leatherwood (Co. ’27), Vice President Freya Dennis (Co. ’27), Secretary James Fowler (Co. ’28), Treasurer Zedrick West (Co. ’28), and Public Relations Officer Emmy Kulathunga (Co. ’27).

Yesterday, the board had the opportunity to meet with Chancellor Lee Roberts (@uncchancellor) and Student Body President Devin Duncan (@sbpdevin) at MVSSC to connect, celebrate Carolina’s commitment to its military-connected community, and discuss how student leaders can continue strengthening that support. We’re excited to see what this year’s SVA board accomplishes!

First. And for All! 🇺🇸🩵

Today, we stepped together to honor the lives lost, the heroes who answered the call, and the strength and resilience shown in the days that followed! 🇺🇸

Thank you to @unc_army_rotc for hosting this meaningful 9/11 Stair Walk and giving our Carolina community an opportunity to come together in remembrance!

This morning, the Carolina community came together before sunrise to climb 2,071 steps in Kenan Stadium in honor of the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

At Carolina, we talk about numbers all the time: how many students we have, how many national championships we have won, how many years we have served North Carolina and beyond.

But this morning, one number mattered most: 2,071.

Each step was a reminder of the firefighters, police officers, emergency personnel and others who climbed the stairs of the World Trade Center that day, running toward danger to save lives.

On the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, this year’s stair climb brought together more participants than ever before. Thank you to everyone who remembered and honored the fallen today. We carry their memory forward.

Thank you 🩵UNC🩵 for hosting the 2026 9/11 Stair Climb Challenge to pay respect to those who lost their lives and honor first responders.

The spirit within Kenan Stadium during the event was fascinating:

Some were solemn
Some offered smiles
Some were emotional
Some cheered at every turn
Some took it slow
Some did pushups at each turn
Some people sang
Some people fought tears
Some struggled
Some shared water

But what struck me the most was an overwhelming spirit of kindness and good in every individual I encountered.

And to see current UNC students (who weren’t even born yet!) – especially those in the ROTC programs – so enthusiastic, respectful and observant…well…I was deeply moved.

And to every firefighter who wore a full kit and tank; to every police officer in full uniform and our active duty military members…thank you. You are badass.

Military-affiliated students bring experience, leadership and a commitment to service to Carolina Nursing.

Our new Assured Admission program will offer qualified ROTC Nurse Corps Midshipmen and Cadets a direct pathway into the BSN Military Pathway beginning with the 2027-28 academic year.

Participants will receive support from their ROTC units and the School of Nursing as they prepare to serve as military nurses. The program will offer 15 seats per admission cycle, with five designated for each participating branch: Army, Navy and Air Force.

We’re honored to be approved as a partner in the @deptofwar’s Senior Service College Fellowship program, helping prepare senior military officers for strategic leadership through the power of education, research and collaboration.

Supporting those who serve has long been part of Carolina’s story. From our founding to the U.S. Navy Pre-Flight School during World War II, and today through our military-connected students, veterans and ROTC programs, we remain committed to those who dedicate their lives to public service.

We look forward to welcoming these fellows to Carolina as we continue strengthening the partnership between higher education and military leadership.

Together, we’re investing in the next generation of leaders through service, innovation and partnership.

Thank you for your exceptional leadership and mentorship in developing future naval officers. We are also grateful to Jessica and the Tanaka family for their steadfast support. We were honored to welcome Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Daryl Caudle for this special occasion.

We extend a warm welcome to CAPT Cain as the new CO of the NCPR Consortium.

Fair winds and following seas, CAPT Tanaka! ⚓️
