📖🌟 As Open Access Week comes to an end, we’re proud to highlight “Jim Crow in the Asylum” (@uncpress) by Kylie Smith (@drkknits). Thanks to support from Digital Publishing in the Humanities and the Emory Center for Digital Scholarship @emory_ecds, “Jim Crow in the Asylum” is available to read for free as an enhanced digital edition.

Enriched by ArcGIS StoryMaps and interactive data visualizations in Tableau, the enhanced digital edition brings to life Dr. Smith’s extensive research on the complicated history of psychiatric health care and segregation in the American South.

“Smith’s book is an excellent example of how to listen through archival silences in order to present an account of one of the most marginalized groups in the United States during the twentieth century.”—Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences

“... ‘Jim Crow in the Asylum’ persuasively illustrates that anti-Black racism is not an incidental bias but a foundational element of US psychiatric history. It is an important contribution to the history of medicine and disability studies.”—CHOICE

THANK YOU to Anna Krome-Lukens for sharing her new book, STRONG STATE, WEAK LINKS: Eugenics and the Southern Politics of Welfare, with us last night, and to our good friend Rob Ferguson for making this event happen. We had an excellent discussion about the history of eugenics and how it shaped the the state welfare system in North Carolina, the enduring question of who is worthy of care and who gets to decide, plus some great insights into Anna’s 20-year process of writing this superb book.

We have more copies waiting for you here, so come and get ‘em! Thank you to @uncpress for publishing so many great books for us to read. 🙏🏼

We’ll be back in the Regional Room on Saturday at 3PM for a reading with Lauren K. Watel & Chelsea Rathburn. We hope to see you there!

I’m so glad this book exists: a history of George Washington and slavery though the lens of memory, or, a history of George Washington and memory through the lens of history. the opening chapter chronicling the history of George Washington and slavery during his lifetime strikes me as good to assign in a college or high school classroom. I appreciate how the book includes syntheses of scholarship by Erica Armstrong Dunbar, Francois Furstenberg (which I should re-read next), & public history sites like Mount Vernon. my favorite was the chapter on the 1930s, arguing that Americans during the 1932 bicentennial of George Washington’s birth aimed to humanize him, influencing evolving trends in the bicentennial and founders chic eras. overall a major undertaking that produced a valuable & engaging read.

Education has the power to open doors. From 1935 to 1965 the New Farmers of America helped introduce rural Black youth to the world. Join me as I sit down with Dr. Bobby J. Smith to discuss his latest book Black Farm Boys which explores the origins of the organization & traces its impact & legacy on Black youth in agriculture.
