UNCW’s Center for Marine Science Open House was a BLAST! @uncwilmington @uncwcms 🌊⛴️🔬🐟

This past Saturday, UNCW’s CMS and the recently commissioned, R/V Osprey, were open to the public. I helped operate vessel tours at the dock while showcasing incredible research occurring at UNCW.

Over 500 people visited CMS within 5hrs, from which ~200 toured the research vessel. With this 78ft aluminum research catamaran, UNCW students are able to use state-of-the-art equipment, learn practical skills, and collaborate with faculty and community organizations.

With a lab like the Center for Marine Science and a research vessel like the Osprey, UNCW students can soar to their fullest potential! 🌊🐟⛴️🔬

September Spawning Update‼️

In the first week of September, we monitored for spawning activity in our Orbicella faveolata (OFAV), and Pseudodiploria clivosa (PCLI) colonies. In total, we observed spawning from 9 of 9 OFAV colonies and 10 of 13 PCLI colonies resulting in an estimated 1.1 million OFAV larvae and 171,000 PCLI larvae initially produced. We were able to ship an estimated 200,000 total larvae to partners in Florida, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Texas. We had amazing OFAV settlement rates and many tiles with hundreds of new settled recruits.

Start off spooky season with us as we learn about something lurking in our local waterways. 🫣 Algae are foundational building blocks of aquatic ecosystems which offer an array of benefits. Yet, Harmful Algal Blooms (or HABs)—episodes of unregulated algal growth—can have significant ecological, economic, and human health consequences through biomass accumulation and the production of toxic compounds.

Researchers, including Dr. Brittany Zepernick with @pepsi_lab_uncw, have spent decades working to understand why certain algae bloom and what environmental factors fuel their growth and toxicity. Dr. Zepernick will share what we’ve discovered and explore and the good and bad of blooms in the Cape Fear River Basin, and across the globe.

🗓️: Saturday, October 3rd at 9:00 a.m.
📍: CFRW Office (617 Surry St.)
🥞: Join us before the seminar at 8 a.m. for free coffee and pancakes courtesy of our fall interns!
