What can poetry make from anger, grief, love — and a world in constant motion?

On Wednesday 14 October, we welcome poet, translator and Action Books editor Johannes Göransson to The Keats Shelley, where he will read from The Adorations.

Written while caring for his autistic son and his dying mother, this fierce and tender collection moves through God, death and childrearing. A mother’s body changes through cancer; a man becomes a bird; a riot convulses society. Yet alongside the violence, there are flowers, style, kissing and spells — moments from which poetry creates its own strange, paradisical language.

Göransson is the author of several poetry collections, including Summer and The New Quarantine, and a translator of some of Sweden’s most celebrated contemporary poets.

In the first two weeks of the semester, third-year architecture students participated in a “Mapping Rome” workshop led by University of Oregon Architecture Professor James Tice. Students worked in groups across Piazza del Popolo, Piazza Navona, Piazza di Spagna, Piazza del Campidoglio, and Piazza Farnese, exploring the architectural and urban elements that make each space unique.

Through Nolli diagrams, vista sketches, and watercolours, students were encouraged to slow down and truly observe the piazza, not simply photograph what they saw, but draw it. The workshop highlighted the importance of drawing as a way to strengthen the connection between the eye, hand, and mind, while examining details such as elevation, typography, street furniture, natural elements, and other features that give Rome its geography and sense of place.

The students analyzed and compiled their observations into diagrams and presented their findings to a panel of guest critics across different American institutes around Rome. This workshop is also part of the undergraduates’ first studio design project, aiming to bring lessons from Rome’s urban fabric into their own architectural work.

We are incredibly appreciative and honored to have Professor Tice with us to share his knowledge, insight, and passion for understanding the city through mapping and drawing!

Rising fourth-year Madison Chambers spent her summer immersed in two of the School of Architecture’s ongoing research initiatives in Rome, funded by an NDRome summer 2026 Global Professional Experience (GPE) internship.

The first half of her internship centered on the Ermoupolis Project, studying Neoclassical architecture on the Greek island of Syros with a focus on the Town Hall. Madison contributed a drawing to a forthcoming book on the project, publishing alongside an exhibition that opened in Syros on August 1, and helped prepare the exhibition itself.

Her second phase turned to the Mausoleum of Hadrian, known today as Castel Sant’Angelo, part of a multiyear undergraduate research effort building toward a major publication on the monument’s original architecture. Madison produced on-site documentation and drawings and joined archaeological site visits across Italy.

“Working on the Ermoupolis Project in Greece as well as research and documentation at Castel Sant’Angelo with numerous visits to historic sites across Italy, I was able to experience Rome in a new way,” Madison said. “Thank you to Professor [Vitti] and the School of Architecture for this wonderful summer experience.”

Glocalize Yourself Rome Italy.
🇻🇦✨ A day surrounded by history, art, and faith at the heart of the Vatican with students and professors from the University of Notre Dame!
Our journey began in the magnificent Vatican Museums, one of the largest museum complexes in the world, home to thousands of masterpieces collected by the Popes over centuries. We admired Arnaldo Pomodoro’s iconic “Sphere Within Sphere” 🌐, wandered through the stunning galleries, explored the breathtaking Gallery of Maps 🗺️, and marveled at the famous tapestries, including the remarkable one where the figure of Jesus seems to follow visitors with His gaze 👀.
We then entered the extraordinary Raphael Rooms 🎨, decorated by Raphael and his workshop for Pope Julius II, before reaching the masterpiece of masterpieces: Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ✨, one of the greatest artistic achievements in human history.
From there, we enjoyed the privilege of entering St. Peter’s Basilica directly from the museums. Inside the largest church in the world ⛪, we admired Michelangelo’s moving Pietà, Bernini’s majestic Baldachin, the monumental Chair of Saint Peter, and the incredible mosaic reproduction of Raphael’s Transfiguration.
Our visit continued beneath the basilica into the Vatican Grottoes, where centuries of papal history rest beneath the church. We also stood on the historic Rota Porphyretica, the ancient red porphyry disk used during medieval papal coronation ceremonies, connecting us directly to over a thousand years of history. 🌍❤️
