racehorse: get married! - jordaan mason and the horse museum (live at st. george the martyr church)

These days I have been drawn to acoustic or minimally amplified music and in a discussion about late 2000s indie music Emil sent this over to me and what the actual fuck. Be prepared to cry and question life after this.

This was a very special concert because this project by Jordaan Mason was a ever changing collective but this event featured their largest configuration and you can really feel the connection between these people. The way they play feels like you are just amongst a lot of friends at the end of a party before sunrise, where everyone is at their most vulnerable state. The church setting makes it all work so perfectly, through the reverb of the hall every sound feels naturally haunting and confronting. But there is also a gentleness and simplicity in the set up and in the music, although it has a dark warning tone - as the song is about getting married and Jordaan shares that the album is about divorce before the start of the set. Still, the storytelling vocals invite you into this feeling of reminiscing something that you know is doomed. At one point all the players join in Jordaan in a choir where the minimal dissonance creates a soul destroying effect (and I’m not one to like choirs in songs) but in this case it was so effective, adding a grandiosity and weight to the memories being told.

After this moment I had lingering goosebumps, whatever was activated I don’t know, but I remained in a melancholic pool after watching this. Emil also told me that this set was recorded and is available in full on Jordaan Mason’s Bandcamp, which feels almost indulgent, the fact that this moment was captured.

Thank you to live music, thank you to moments like this where people come together to make something so real, thank you to spaces that provide a stage for this to happen and thank you for the people that carefully archive all of this.

With bandmates scattered across Ontario, we jump at the opportunity to link shows together (and rehearsals and fun 😅)! This time, however, was extra special! Tom Thompson @chimeofwrensmusic joined us both nights adding a layer of bliss to our set (and a mini set to kick off our show in Ottawa). And we finally had the chance to share the stage with the unforgettable @thebandpicastro who dazzled us all! Thanks to @unelectric and @mmmmbrownlee who warmed things up, performing incredible sets! And a very special thanks to @annettestudios and @irenespub for hosting!! 🥰❤️😘
