From a collective youth Call to institutional follow-through 🇺🇳🕊️🏛️

An important development for the Call by Young People for a New Culture of Peace in the Minds of Women and Men for the 21st Century. At its 225th session, UNESCO’s Executive Board welcomed the Call, developed by 145 young leaders from 135 countries, and requested that its recommendations be taken into account in the strategic reflection and implementation of the UNESCO80 Roadmap. It also encouraged Member States to disseminate the Call widely, particularly among young people, through UNESCO National Commissions and relevant networks.

This matters. In a world confronting conflict, polarisation, information disorder and rapid technological change, a culture of peace cannot remain an abstract aspiration. It must be reflected in how we educate, preserve cultural memory, enable access to knowledge, safeguard information integrity, govern artificial intelligence and include young people in decisions shaping their futures.

Developed through a youth-led process, the Call brings together 145 young leaders from 135 countries around a shared conviction: building peace requires more than words. It calls for meaningful youth participation, education against hatred and division, cultural understanding, access to knowledge, information integrity, responsible AI governance and protection of education, science, culture, communication and information during crises and conflict.

As the delegate representing India at the 14th UNESCO Youth Forum 2025, I feel humbled to have contributed through written inputs, consultations and deliberations, and subsequently served as the Asia-Pacific Youth Focal Point in developing the Reflection Document and Call. In September, I joined fellow Youth Focal Points in presenting and discussing the Call at high-level events in Paris, in the presence of UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany Ezz and France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot.

This is an encouraging step for a collective effort. But institutional recognition is a beginning, not an endpoint.

Through this Call, 145 young leaders from 135 Member States and Associate Members advocate for a renewed culture of peace, putting youth voices at the heart of decisions shaping our future. At the Board’s request, the Call will be widely disseminated and its recommendations taken into account in the strategic reflection and implementation of the UNESCO80 Roadmap. The Call was presented in September at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris to @UNESCO_DG and @jnbarrot. The initiative was supported by @francediplo_EN. For young people, with young people, by young people. Not everything that looks like breaking news tells the whole story.

A dramatic video can grab our attention, but before we believe it or share it, let's pause and ask: Who posted it? When was it recorded? What's the original source?

This Global Media and Information Literacy Week, let's learn to look beyond the screen, question what we see, and verify before we share.

Because a more informed world begins with us. We All Play a Part.
