New Hampshire’s estuaries are about to get even healthier, thanks to a major expansion at UNH’s Jackson Estuarine Laboratory on Great Bay in Durham.

U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen ( @senatorshaheen ) joined UNH and state leaders recently to celebrate the project, which added 4,500 square feet of enhanced facilities for studying estuaries. Some of the new features:

• Two high bays for working on vessels, buoys, and equipment for aquaculture and remote sensing;
• Dive lockers with showers and space for storage and repair of SCUBA equipment;
• A 36-person meeting room with an adjacent office;
• A new entryway to the facility.

“This project modernizes and expands UNH’s nearly 60-year-old laboratory on New Hampshire’s Great Bay, elevating UNH's capacity for estuarine research, teaching, and public service,” says Erik Chapman, director of UNH’s School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering and N.H. Sea Grant. “Research and monitoring focused on water quality, environmental toxins, habitat restoration, and aquaculture deliver direct economic and quality-of-life benefits for Granite Staters.”

Fun fact: Jackson Estuarine Lab was the one of the nation’s first academic labs dedicated solely to studying estuaries, which are partially enclosed bodies of brackish water where rivers meet the ocean.

Ph.D. student Jess presented her research on noise impacts on gray and harbor seal calling behavior in the Non-Cetacean Acoustics session at the @marinemammalogy conference! Initially a four minute research talk seemed daunting but it turned into a fun challenge to distill the research into only the most important, need-to-know elements. It was a “roaring” success! 😉🦭🔊

Bats get a bad rap this time of year, but they deserve better. 🦇 We asked Haley Andreozzi, professor of wildlife conservation and UNH Extension conservation state specialist, to share a few things most people don’t know about them.

Which fact surprised you most?

Fresh oysters taste even better when you know how to shuck them yourself. Share this tutorial with someone who’s ready to learn the art of shucking!

Did you know that New Hampshire’s oyster aquaculture industry is relatively new, and growing fast? At @nhseagrant, we work closely with oyster growers to document the impact of these shellfish on the #GraniteState.

Oyster aquaculture statistics (via @nhfishandgame and @tncnewhampshire):

🦪 $6.8 million – the economic benefit of oyster aquaculture in 2025
🦪 52.7 acres of oyster reef restored since 2009
🦪 946% increase in the value of NH’s oyster harvest between 2015 and 2025

Stargazers of all ages gathered at the UNH Observatory last weekend for the New England Fall Astronomy Festival, two days of telescopes, talks, and clear night skies.

Looking up is kind of our thing. Over the last three decades, UNH has led at least 22 NASA and NOAA missions, and instruments built right here in Durham are helping scientists study the sun and the space around Earth.

Want to see for yourself? The UNH Observatory hosts free public observing sessions the first and third Saturday of every month.

The many different ways to say – come and learn about the wonders of the sea at Ocean Discovery Day! 🌊

All are welcome to join us on Saturday, October 24th at the @uofnh’s Chase Ocean Engineering Lab. This family-friendly event is free and offers a glimpse into the latest science and technology being used to study marine life and ocean ecosystems.

Meet students and researchers, like the GEBCO scholars featured here, studying locally-important topics that help us understand our global ocean.

We can’t wait to see you there! Register today by clicking the link in our bio ☝️

Come birding with me from the deck of the R/V Neil Armstrong in the middle of the Gulf of Maine! 🌊

This fall, I was part of a cohort of scientists from @unhresearch that conducted research aboard @unols_org / @whoi.ocean research vessel Neil Armstrong offshore in the Gulf of Maine for 3 weeks. During nearly every second of downtime during the research cruise, I was out on deck birding.

Being offshore is a unique opportunity to see pelagic seabird species, which spend weeks or months at sea without returning to shore. As it was the peak of fall migration, we also had visits from 29 different non-seabird species that took advantage of our vessel as a reststop along their journey.

Follow along as I show you some of the 45 different bird species we encountered!

Researchers at @uofnh are studying New Hampshire’s 19,000 miles of rivers and streams, from the Connecticut River in the west to the waters flowing to the Atlantic Ocean in the east, which shape the state’s lives, livelihoods, and landscapes.

The research team is taking advantage of three rare opportunities to study rivers and streams before and after significant changes to better understand how New Hampshire’s communities along a river’s path are impacted by changes in water quality.

“It’s unusual to be able to measure streams before and after significant restoration events,” says NHAES scientist Wilfred Wollheim, the Josephine A. Lamprey Professor in Climate and Sustainability and professor in the UNH department of natural resources and the environment at @colsa.unh.

“The data we’re collecting before and after human-made dam removal, beaver dam construction, and our own restoration project will provide insights that are relevant throughout New Hampshire.”

While the expectation is that each change will help improve water quality, alter greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce the amount of nitrogen flowing downstream, the goal of each study is to test that hypothesis and quantify the size of those impacts.

Can the latest research tools and methods help to better understand how natural and planned landscape changes impact New Hampshire’s water quality now and in the future? Wollheim and his lab are working hard to find the answer to that vital question.

A behind the scenes look at the @uofnh Jackson Estuarine Lab renovation. 🌊

Stay tuned for more updates on the opening of the upgraded research facility!

Located five miles from the Durham campus on the shores of #GreatBayEstuary, the laboratory features well-equipped facilities where scientists conduct research on physical and biological components of coastal ecosystems.

It’s a pilot whale party off the back deck of the R/V Neil Armstrong! 🛳️

I’m part of a cohort from @unhmarine / @unhresearch that has been aboard the @whoi.ocean / @unols_org vessel @rvneilarmstrong offshore in the Gulf of Maine for ~3 weeks conducting marine research using acoustics. Despite the nor’easter forcing some brief indoor downtime, the research cruise has been otherwise filled with wildlife sightings.

Yesterday, a large group of pilot whales spent nearly the entire day with our vessel. Their constant presence was apparent from their many spouts, leaps, and splashes spread out across the horizon. Occasionally, they’d venture right up alongside the Armstrong to get a closer look. At one point in the day, nearly the entire crew stood on the back deck together admiring these gorgeous whales up close, with smiles on our faces and oohs and aahs audible on every video.

The night prior, the night shift had seen incredible surface densities of krill, as well as a huge group of squid consuming them. As a favorite food of the pilot whale, it’s likely these squid are exactly what the whales are in the area for.

After 3 weeks of blue sharks, mola molas, over 40 bird species, and more, our time offshore is nearly over. I’m looking forward to whatever these final few days bring.
