"AMERICANISMS" THAT ORIGINATED FROM BRITAIN. This photo shows Winton’s "Drug Store" in Bromley Market Square on 25 Dec 1930. DRUG STORE not an Americanism, it is a British phrase that by 1930 had found its way back across the pond. All the following words started off British English, but we ceased to use them as trends evolved, while early American colonists preserved the original terms straight into modern day. So before anyone gets on their high horse re "Americanisms😡", check they aren't surviving examples of traditional British English😊.

DRUG STORE: Used in Victorian/Edwardian Britain before "chemist" took over.

DIAPER: Middle English for patterned cloth. Used by Shakespeare and the British populous long before the word "nappy" took over here.

SIDEWALK: Formed in the 1500s centuries before the UK shifted to "pavement" well into the 1800s.

SURE: ("Yes, okay"): Evolved from 16th-century English phrases like "for sure." Today, saying a standalone "Sure" or "Sure thing" feels entirely American, but its roots are thoroughly British.

SOCCER: 1890s UK Oxford slang, short for AsSOCiation Football.

CANDY: From Middle English candi. Standard British long before "sweets" made an appearance.

TRASH: 14th-century term for rubbish used for centuries including by Shakespeare in Othello.

FAUCET: Middle English for a barrel tap, common before "tap" became standard.

FALL: Short for "fall of the leaf," used consistently in 16th-century England before eventually "autumn" came into common use.

GOTTEN: Traditional Middle English past participle of get was standard across Britain until the UK gradually dropped it for "got" while American settlers kept it.

I GUESS ("I suppose"): Used in England for centuries, including by author Geoffrey Chaucer in The Canterbury Tales.

COOTIES: Coined by British soldiers in WWI from the Malaysian kutu (body lice).

BANGS: From the British horse term bang-tail, though applied to human hair in the US.
