Grits | A Documentary Short by Aaron J. Jackson, 2026
Overtown - Miami, FL
Runtime: 18 minutes, 57 seconds.

Works by @unkleclarence
Curated by @laurynn_l
Produced by @macayado | @quiethours.space

From the family photographs and memories that inspired the work to the conversations happening throughout the room, the night became a reflection of what Grits meant beyond the photographs themselves.

In this scene, Arthur Alexander reflects on what he took away from the work. Clarence’s decision to stay true to his family, his roots, and the things that make him who he is. In a city like Miami, where so many different experiences and backgrounds come together, that connection to where you come from can mean even more.

That idea sits at the heart of Grits: knowing where you come from, holding onto it, and allowing those experiences to shape what you create.

A year ago, I got the chance to document the closing night of @unkleclarence ‘Grits’ exhibition curated by @laurynn_l and hosted by @quiethours.space

More than anything, I wanted the film to feel like being in the room, hearing the stories, seeing the family, feeling the energy, and understanding the memories behind the work.

What started as a documentation of an exhibition became a small piece about Clarence’s family, the stories passed down, the memories of his great-grandmother’s home, and the roots that continue to shape who he is and how he sees the world. Through conversations with Clarence, Lauryn, and Max from Quiet Hours Gallery, we were able to hear different perspectives on the work and what the exhibition meant to them.

I wanted the film to capture more than the photographs. The conversations, the family, the reactions, and the energy surrounding the closing of the exhibition.
