College is supposed to be some of the best years of our lives, but that doesn’t mean every day is easy!!

Between classes, friendships, relationships, jobs and trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, it can be A LOT. And sometimes we get so caught up in everything going on around us that we forget to check in on ourselves and the people we love.

That’s a huge part of why Out of the Darkness UNL means so much to us. We all have different reasons for walking, whether it’s for someone we’ve lost, someone we love or even ourselves. Our walk gives students a chance to come together, share their stories and realize they’re not the only ones navigating the ups and downs of life.

Through the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, we’re also helping support education, research and resources that make these conversations possible.

So this World Mental Health Day, check on your roommate, your classmates, your friends and yourself. You never need a special reason to ask someone how they’re really doing. 🤍

Some days, getting out of bed feels easy. Other days, maybe the reason is just seeing your favorite person, calling your mom, getting your favorite meal or catching a really pretty sunset on the way home. Your reason doesn’t have to be huge or life changing — sometimes the little things are more than enough for today.

What’s your reason to get out of bed today?

Because everyone deserves to know they have someone in their corner.

You don’t have to know exactly what to say. Sometimes being the person who notices, asks the extra question and actually stays to listen can mean more than you realize.

World Suicide Prevention Day may be over, but checking on your people is an everyday thing. 💙

Ask the extra question. Send the random “are you okay?” text. Sit with them a little longer and actually listen to the answer. You never really know what someone is carrying, so be the friend who checks in just because!!

Nothing brings people together quite like free waffles! 🧇💛

This week, the College of Engineering community enjoyed Waffles with the College, hosted in partnership with UNL Dining Services and our embedded CAPS counselor. Faculty, staff, and students took a break from their busy day to connect over a delicious breakfast while celebrating the importance of community and well-being.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by and to UNL Dining Services for providing the waffles!

Hey, Huskers:
The post says it all, but the tl;dr is that, for a few different internal factors, Huskers Against Gun Violence will be closing its doors after the Spring 2026 semester.

It’s been a privilege and an honor to work with you all for these past few years, and we hope that you take our messages and information with you wherever you go. This may not be goodbye forever, but for now, this is a goodbye from HAGV, and we hope from the bottom of our hearts that you all take care of yourselves, and to use your voices to change the world!

With much love and hope,
Huskers Against Gun Violence, Board of Officers
