A Glimmer Announcement+ Many people have commented over the past 6 months on how wonderful it is to see me kicking goals. Here’s the truth about social media content creation… And AuDHD/autistic burnout… The ‘me’ you see tries to lean into the gratitude and avoid the anger and frustration publicly. The ‘me’ you see doesn’t talk openly about the challenges with strangers because in the (paraphrased) words of @brenebrown in The Gifts of Imperfection, you get to choose who you share your vulnerability with - and for me that’s not a general audience that largely is unaware of the abelism that shapes their own cognitive biases. The ‘me’ you see has been struggling for quite some time but people would far rather be inspired than challenged when it comes to disability and neurodivergence. But it is also true that while the ethical dilemma of the “right to non-disclosure”’is the crux of my academic research, there is a separate ethical dilemma axis that intersects: the need to educate. So over the next little while, I’m dropping my social media guard a little. It’s time we talked. Thanks to @disabethany for her recent post on the emotional labour that simply being a disabled person in public is. #AGlimmerOfHope #FiPeel #PhD #AuDHD #Burnout

'Fureru' invites visitors into a quiet encounter with two autonomous mechanical creatures. Their behaviours follow internal rhythms — sometimes steady, sometimes withdrawn — inspired by the slow, unfamiliar movements of organisms like siphonophores and coral. The project asks whether meeting a non-living being, entirely unlike ourselves, can still evoke empathy. Drawing on Jakob von Uexküll’s concept of Umwelt, which describes how every being inhabits its own perceptual world, 'Fureru' considers how attending to different ways of sensing and existing might open new paths for connection. Visitors engage through wooden touchpads that do not control the creatures but create brief moments of exchange, in which a gesture of touch may subtly influence their motion. This invites visitors to step back from projecting assumptions and instead slow down and notice what is unfolding. Though the creatures are mechanical, the encounter turns our attention back toward one another. Just as every organism perceives the world differently, so do people, and 'Fureru' offers a space to meet those differences with curiosity, care, and attunement. Help us make the most of this great program so we can make some excellent, accessible, inclusive art. We’re sitting at just over $1000 at the moment and we’d love to get to a sneaky $1500 before the end of the day if we can! Head to our link in bio to donate or find out more! DONATIONS END TODAY, April 30th! All donations over $2 are tax deductible. Always grateful for Country I live, breathe, dream, create, thrive, play, dwell and some days grieve upon. Always was, always will be Aboriginal Land. #AGlimmerOfHope #Canberra #DisabilityArts #AustralianTheatre #FiPeel Photo by Mars Que @photos_by_a_martian [Image description: yellow text reading ’12 Hours Left to Donate’ on an image of a short-haired human in a power wheelchair and a red-haired woman, both wearing comfortable workout clothing in a black theatre, looking at each other.]

THEY’VE FOUND THEIR VOICE But can they figure out where all the other voices are coming from? [Video description: A black and white video. A white-skinned human with short hair and glasses sits, visible from the waist up. The camera pans quickly between blurred out sides of the room, voices speaking across the human in the middle.] ‘You’re singing. That’s wonderful, Fi.’ ‘A Glimmer of Hope’ is a one human show about an artist reclaiming their voice – and aiming to understand all the fragments of self that make them. With so many voices coming at you, inside and out, where do you even choose to begin? After some time in the mental health wards, The Artist, a central persona, finds solace and rediscovery in singing again. Their mother and their psychiatrist (maybe, probably) take it as a sign of healing – is it? You can find out more about this show at our link in bio, where you’ll also find a link to our fundraising campaign, which ends at the end of April! Help us support disability-led theatre today. As always, thanks to our friends at @quantumleapdance_australia for sharing their space with us. Always grateful for Country I live, breathe, dream, create, thrive, play, dwell and some days grieve upon. Always was, always will be Aboriginal Land. #AGlimmerOfHope #Canberra #DisabilityArts #AustralianTheatre #FiPeel

SETTING THE SCENE [Video description: A black and white video. A white-skinned human with short hair and glasses sits, visible from the waist up. A voice offscreen reads script directions to them.] Fi’s been busy writing away excerpts for Glimmer these few months. From psychiatric wards to schoolyards to more liminal, abstract spaces, we’ve been getting a peek into the range of inner worlds – and past experiences – that make up an artist, and specifically, The Artist, one of the key personas Fi takes on in the show. Now you get a sneak peak of a rehearsal reading too! Why is there a Psychiatrist? What will Mum say to them? What are they singing, and why? You can find out more about the show, Glimmer, at the link in bio. We’re also running a fundraising campaign supported via the Australian Cultural Fund there, which we’d love for you to pass on if you can! And as always, thank you to our friends at @quantumleapdance_australia for letting us play in their space! Always grateful for Country I live, breathe, dream, create, thrive, play, dwell and some days grieve upon. Always was, always will be Aboriginal Land. #AGlimmerOfHope #Canberra #DisabilityArts #AustralianTheatre #FiPeel

IT STARTED WITH A SONG… [Video description: a human with short, brown-blonde hair stands in a black theatre space wearing a pale green shirt and purple glasses. They are singing as light from a window above them shines down on them.] Here’s a snippet of Fi singing some Sondheim as an exploratory excerpt of work. Will The Artist find who they are again? Will they successfully meet The Singer? Who are these characters, and why do these songs matter to them? You can find out more about the show, Glimmer, at the link in bio. We’re also running a fundraising campaign supported via the Australian Cultural Fund there, which we’d love for you to pass on if you can! Let’s make more disability-led art. SOMETIMES WE GET A LITTLE SILLY TOO [Video description: A white-skinned woman with reddish blonde hair in a maroon dress sits in a theatre space with a white-skinned man with short, brunette hair. He is wearing a rainbow tie-dyed shirt. The camera pans between the two quickly as they banter. A third voice does not appear onscreen, but comes from behind the camera.] We spent yesterday with our gorgeous, generous supporters at the QL2 space @quantumleapdance_australia , testing excerpts, making content and having a bit of a laff. It’s pretty special when you genuinely like – and are even friends with - your collaborators! (How nice for Valentine’s Day!) Also a special unintended plug for friend of a friend @nick86kg We’ve got more insights into the Glimmer process coming at you soon, but in the meantime you can head to our link in bio for more information about Glimmer, and a link to our crowdfunding campaign via the Australian Cultural Fund. ASKING BIG QUESTIONS❓ Sharing a sneak peek of some of last year’s Glimmer development showing! The development process behind Fi’s one-human musical show has been asking gnarly questions like: ⭐ What does movement or dance look like and mean to a wheelchair user? ⭐ What makes an artist? ⭐ What makes us human? [Video description: yellow text on black asks questions including: How do you dance using a wheelchair? What does a Singer do when they’ve been silenced? What parts make up an Artist? And, how do we become whole? Spliced in between these slides are clips of a woman with deep red hair and a human with short, reddish-brown hair moving in response to each other, swaying, arms moving into the air, circling each other in a black box theatre. The short haired performer sometimes uses a wheelchair and sometimes does not, and sometimes sings acapella and sometimes with a vocal modifier.] 🎥 Video footage by @photos_by_a_martian You can support this project by heading to our link in bio from February 1st. ID: An image of four fabulous AFABs sitting around a table in warm-lit local bar. Meet some (but not all) of the fabulous humans who have shown up over the past 48 hours to support this disabled professional artist as they have continued to explore their one-human shadowed show: A Glimmer of Hope, also generously supported in-kind by @canberramuseumandgallery and @thestreetcbr One more day to go to solidify the experimental learnings that have emerged and then bring on the new year and the first full draft of script and score that will be dedicated to the month of January 😎 The time, space, care and skill by all (including myself) dedicated to support this epically fun body, brain and voice has been a true gift and will resonate on through my creative DNA well after we all set out again on our separate paths on Sunday evening. True magic resides here. Always grateful for Country I live, breathe, dream, create, thrive, play, dwell and some days grieve upon.
