Want to know how to get into broadcasting? We've got three tips!

Rachel McConaghie, a third-year journalism major at the SOJC, knows a thing or two about sports broadcasting. She’s been involved with @uoducktv and @kwvasports. And she's currently a reporter at Eugene’s @kezi9news station, a podcast host for the SOJC's Ascend magazine, and president of Oregon Women in Sports Communication (@uo_wsc).

She offers three tips for students eager to start a career in broadcasting. Tip 1: Get involved in as many clubs and organizations as possible because that’s where you’ll make key connections.

Watch the video to get two more tips from Rachel and embark on your sports broadcasting career today!

no better way to celebrate national women in sports day then by covering women’s basketball with an all women’s crew 🩷

🏀💪 An all-female broadcast crew. A packed arena. And a powerful reminder of what opportunity can unlock.

Tonight, a team of 17 women behind and in front of the camera will produce an @oregonwbb women’s basketball broadcast for Big Ten Conference+ as part of the Big Ten’s StudentU program, marking National Girls & Women in Sports Day.

Together, SOJC students like Olivia Arciniega (@oliviaarciniegasports), Lily Crane (@lilycrane_media), Sophie Fowler (@sophietfowlermedia), and Shyla Orquia (@shylaorquia) are proving what’s possible when women are supported, trusted, and given real opportunities to lead.

For #sportscomm students, this isn’t just about one game. It’s about representation, mentorship, and building the confidence to advocate for themselves in an industry where women have historically been underrepresented.

This is what experiential learning—and the future of sports broadcasting—looks like.

My favorite type of business is when we get to wrap in a little fun.

The @uo_wsc went to @trailblazers to learn a bit from the Director of PR and see a game.

@xander1of1g even got to tag along. 🏀❤️🖤

Thanks to @uosojc for the support! And @rachel.mcconaghie for all the organizing.

The @uo_wsc traveled to Portland for the @thornsfc final regular season game. We got a behind the scenes with the director of fan engagement and helped welcome fans to Providence Park, passing out trading cards of some of the players for fan appreciation night.

Such a great experience! When I asked @xander1of1g if he wanted to go watch a game with 20 undergrad women, he readily agreed. 😉
