#UofT has been ranked number one in the world for sustainability, and for good reason. Projects like the new 14-storey mass timber building, now under construction, are setting a global precedent for sustainable design.

Located on U of T’s St. George campus, the tower will be the tallest academic timber building in Canada, providing cutting-edge spaces for three of the university’s faculties and schools.

“If we do the right thing, we have a chance – we have a fighting chance of creating a future that's better,” said Fei-Fei Li at a recent event with Geoffrey Hinton that was hosted by #UofT at the @marsdiscoverydistrict and livestreamed to thousands of people online.

“So, what I really feel is not delusional optimism at this point – it’s actually a sense of urgency of responsibility.”

Organized by Toronto venture capital firm Radical Ventures in partnership with @uoft, @stanford, the @_vectorinst and other organizations, the Hinton-Li talk was part AI history lesson, part call to action – and served to kick off the Radical AI Founders Masterclass, a four-week program that’s designed to teach AI researchers how to build AI companies.

•
Video transcript:

“Welcome back, Arts & Science!
September is my favourite time of year — the excitement on campus is energizing.

•
While we are a large Faculty, I really want to meet each of you this year — whether it’s at an event, strolling across the newly landscaped front campus, or here in the Sid Smith Commons — please don’t hesitate to say ‘Hi!’

•
Before we know it, sweater weather will be upon us, and you’ll be deep in the midst of course work. So, I encourage you to use the start of term to take advantage of the incredible opportunities all around you — make new friends, join a club, tour the amenities across campus, and explore the remarkable city of Toronto.

•
I’d like to extend a special welcome to all the new students joining our community. I remember all-too-well how overwhelming the first few days can be, so please don’t hesitate to connect with the many people across the University that are here to support your arrival and your entire University journey.

•
For now, I wish you all a fabulous start to this school year, and I look forward to seeing you on campus very soon!”

💥Test-to-failure in the Concrete Material Laboratories

Sheen Patel (CivE, Year 3) welcomed us into the lab to observe his experiment measuring the compressive strength of a 50 mm mortar cube.

This is part of a larger project measuring the strength contribution of natural pozzolans replacing a part of cement mixture to reduce carbon emissions from concrete. Sheen is doing research under the supervision of Prof. Doug Hooton.

FROM THE COACH'S DESK
"Training camp was awesome and we are excited to go into the season focused and put our hard work to the test. We look forward to continuing to grow together as a family and see what we can do as the student-athletes keep putting in the work to surpass their potential." - Bobbi-Jo Cronk, University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's rugby head coach.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Key Returners: Liane Catibog (Prop), Sydney Heighington (Centre), Tristan McElrea (Fullback), Emma Yang (Flanker)

Key Departures: Kashish Arya (Fly half), Demi Swann (Prop/8M), Ella Tetrault (Fullback/Centre)

LAST SEASON'S LEADERS

FROM THE FIELD
"Given the positive and focused team environment, we are incredibly optimistic and excited as we start the new season. Throughout the process of training camp, we have grown a lot as a unit and our cohesion is improving every day. We can't wait to hit the field together for our home opener and see what kind of an impact we can make!" - Liane Catibog, 4th year, Prop

In the opening weekend of the OUA regular season the Blues will be looking to get off to a fast start versus the Golden Hawks. Last season in Waterloo, U of T shut out Laurier 64-0, and they will be aiming to replicate that success on home turf to start out 2023.

Home game tickets can be purchased at varsityblues.ca/tickets.
