POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

In memory of the lives lost and in solidarity with those who continue to heal, we remember the tragic events of the Lapu Lapu Day Festival on April 26, 2025, in Vancouver.

The Project APPA team recognizes that Asian Heritage Month is not only a time for celebration but also an opportunity to acknowledge the ongoing struggles, resilience, and unity within our communities.

The legacy and spirit of Datu Lapu-Lapu live on in the strength of the Filipino community, whose courage in the face of the tragedy continues to inspire.

We stand in remembrance, solidarity and in hope.

🎉There are various ways to celebrate Asian Heritage Month!

📚 As a first post to recognize the stories and cultural experiences of the Asian community, we've prepared a list of children's books written by storytellers with Asian heritage. Our amazing peer researchers also recommend them.

🌻These stories open hearts and build bridges, not only for children but also for adults.

❗Racism is not always visible
or overt. It can be silent, hidden
in daily conversations, compliments
and questions. Yet, the impact
is enormous and lasting.

📝 Our research team created a list
of common expressions that hint at microaggression and provide the alternatives we can use instead.

🌱 Let’s practice and reflect together. Also, feel free to share with those around you to co-learn the ways to prevent microaggressions.

💡Do you have any similar experiences or have good alternatives you would like to share with us?

📣 📣 ANNOUNCING OUR SPEAKERS!

⌛ We are almost a month away from the annual U of T Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Research Days (May 26th & 27th).

✨ And, we are excited to announce that Rishi Chanderraj (University of Michigan) will give the keynote lecture this year! On May 27th, he will speak on his work in treating acute infections, particularly the prescription of broad-acting antibiotics for sepsis and the effect of specific treatment regimens on patient outcomes.

Day 2 (May 27th) will also feature talks highlighting the research programs of some of the faculty who have joined the EPIC community within the last 5 years:

💫 Aereas Aung (University of Toronto Engineering) is a biomedical researcher developing new methods to boost immune responses at the sites of infections to stop the spread of infectious diseases.
💫 Greg German (Unity Health Toronto) is a medical microbiologist and clinical investigator known for his work in phage therapy for chronic infections.
💫 Michelle Science (The Hospital for Sick Children) is an infectious disease physician with experience in infection prevention and control.
💫 Sharon S. Sukhdeo (Sinai Health and University Health Network) is a new faculty member and a clinical scientist working on understanding the clinical presentations of infectious diseases and gaps in access to public health tools such as vaccinations among the elderly.
💫 Tin D. Vo, PhD, MPH, CE (Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto) is another new faculty member whose equity-focused and community-engaged research is aimed at improving the health and well-being of people belonging to historically marginalized communities.

Stay tuned as we reveal the trainee speakers for Day 1(May 26th) in the coming weeks and remember to submit an abstract for talks and poster presentations.

Registration and abstract submission links in bio.

The event is free and open to all and organized by EPIC in collaboration with the Division of Infectious Diseases at U of T’s Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases at SickKids, Institute for Pandemics and U of T’s postgraduate medical and clinical microbiology programs.
